Cascade and Amarillo 30 grams @ 20 minutes

Hefe Man I reckon that Am has got more bitter in it than we bargained for (well you and me it seems)... has walloped me a few times... even fairly late...

Mr Beer Long Play IPA with Morgan's Centennial Hops bottled on the 9th Feb, just 3 weeks in the bottle - great kick of hops, very drinkable, has anyone put more than 12gm Hop Tea in, spose its' a silly question but some say its overkill. I

Definitely not overkill in my mind.

I did a 25g of El Dorado in a 500ml hop tea that was added to a Sabro based FWK before pitching yeast recently (10L batch).  Also did a 25g of Lemondrop in a 500ml hop tea that was added to 10L of a Coopers Blonde Ale batch at kegging time.

I got fruitier dry hop type aromas in the hop tea Sabro brew, than the non-hop tea half of the batch.  But this was still way short of aromas from dry hopping near the end of fermentation in other brews.

In the Blonde Ale, the Lemondrop hop stand added an extra layer to the "naked" version.  Not much, but enough.  Seems to temper the bitterness marginally.

Having tried hop teas these ways, I  prefer what I get from dry hopping.

I agree re: the hop grammage, it seems everyone has different views, I personally like an extra hop bite, the bitterness sorta lingers. I cracked a Coopers Pale Ale ( 4 weeks in the bottle ) last night that had added 'Pride of Ringwood' 12gm & I could easily handle more, so Thanks @Shamus O'Sean  you have given me the green light.  My friend @Gully85  grows his own fresh hops so that must be better than dried. I haven't dry hopped yet so will have to study it up.

Definitely worth a crack Phil @CLASSIC if you like a bit more hop bite - get yourself a food grade nylon 'hop sock'... I sterilise in boiling water wearing good grade gloves - then add the hops - tie the ends of the 'tube' up - and then toss them in.  There will be more inf to add to the process.  Some general thoughts for now....  usually add towards the end of the ferment - if early - all the aromas go out with the bubbling generation of CO2 and although your brew fridge and surrounds will smell good - that means you have lost the aromas from your brew... so towards end of ferment as things calm down... in go the dry hops in the hp sock... and then they say sorta three days is good... no more... otherwise might go "grassy".... I have not experienced grassiness but usually pull them out after 3 days max -  get the sterilised gloves on, using a sterilised set of Barbie Tongs... swirl the hop sock around and squeeze w Tongs then sterilised gloves.... as our old mate @Beerlust Lusty advised (you there somewhere Lusty Cobber?)... some Brewskis put marbles or good qual Stainless Steel things to sink the hop sock but am not convinced that is necessary... each to their own...  But certainly mate if you are into the hop thing - then late hopping is the dux nuts - but for aroma more so than bittering tho. If bittering is watcher want - then a steep of a few hundred grams of some Crystal Malt in a pot, and then boil w hops for an hour... and add that to the KNK mix when you are ready. HTH mate for a basic start.

Cheers for that @Graubart valuable info from the Pirate ship HMS Graubart, I will be going to the LHBS today & I will get quantities of bulk hops, brew sock & whatever else I need. I want to take my beers to the next level, well at least taste better than just acceptable. On my weekend away ( Rabbit Hunt ) I had some of my brothers brew, he is a tight bottom as he skips all things good & the result is a bland home brew tasting beer. My nephew is a little more energetic & has a primitive kegging setup which produces slightly better results but I took some of mine up for them to try & they sorta said it was nice, but again they don't do hops, grain etc, just the tin BE & yeast.

So again you have inspired me to get hopping. Cheers Bearded  One & Thanks for your help. 😀

Fkkkkkk mate wish you were a tad closer as I would be very happy to get rid of a few more of those furry feral fiends off my Lot mate

And @CLASSIC Phil - bigger (bulk) buys of hops is a cost-effective way to go mate - but if your LHBS is not hours away like mine - and they can store the hops well and have good turnover and provide you with nice aromatic fresh hops - be careful in stocking up - too much - as you do lose aroma etc in storage... unless you have got say the capacity for vacuum wrapped foil storage... in the freezer... you know what I mean mate... I just got a swag at some stage in plain ziplock bags and I reckon between Western Sydney and back to base plus a few weeks of a great smelling freezer - that I lost a multitudinous amount of the beautiful hop aromas... anyway you are a food-maker-foodie fella so will get the gist of what I am blithering on about mate.

'Harlequin Gold' - now that the threat of earthquakes and tsunamis' is over here in NZ thought I'd have a first tasting of this Brit Golden ale featuring these relatively new hops from the UK.  Nice beer,  hops are OK... somewhat understated compared to many 'new world' varieties, but certainly makes for a very refreshing,  easy drinking beer!

first taste of pilsner with dubbya 34 just on 2 weeks in keg today. This one had hop tea added to fv before cold crashed not added why kegged. Hops definitely taste more blended into beer for that reason. First impressions alot cleaner taste than s-189 even though pitched on 25 and brang it down over 9 hours. A little over gassed first impressions but won't know until let sit and age longer and try again.

Could have been bumped why mucking around with pale ale at front. I did gas this on 15 psi through out hole for 1 and half weeks and purge several times to get gas in bottom maby this is why? From now on trying gas on 12 psi see if better. When I say over gassed big head but no bubbles rising the glass was half foam at start this settled down.

@Graubart  Yes I understand, probably what I meant was instead of buying 12gm bags I can get them in 50 100 gm & so on lots, so I would seal them airtight until next use. We always want things fresh.  I have 4 fermenters currently so I will be cranking them all up to produce different brews to ensure a continuous supply of that lovely golden nectar.

Perfect!!!

Yeah I foolishly bought a few kilos of hoppers on spesh from little microbrewery and did not seal them as well as I should have and am a bit disappointed with my lack of focus, and the lost of the lovely volatile aromatic compounds mate...  they will be used up over time but more for bittering now sadly... live and learn mate hey.

But yeah - definitely 100g is better than 12g mate...  esp if the 12g ones are sitting around waiting to be purchased... also usually 100g is cheaper.

CPB do supply nice hops I've found and if you get say enough to fill their small Aus Post shipping bag... not sure... is that one kilo... and think it costs $10.... anyway...  and their prices are good.. plus they send them in ripper good qual foil packs sealed - with a zip lock - that. you can use once cut open... a beautiful thing.

But your walk-in LHBS might be just as good or better ; )

Hey @MitchBastard Mitchie !?!

Just joshing Brewers... one day I may realise - as many of you gun Brewers have already -  the beauty and splendour hidden within a well brewed Saison!?!

Think you blokes are way ahead of me in the BBJ (Beautiful Brewing Journey) 🥳

Am a poor old plodding Euro Beer Peasant working my way through all sorts of malts and hops and their combos and the "tame" yeasts for the time being haha😋

I found out from my mate @Gully85  there is a guy running a shop with a delivery service in the Adelaide Hills who specialises  in Hops/Grain etc.

You order during the week & they deliver on Friday.  I will get together a collection in smaller quantities & start my hop journey.

Cheers for your input mate.

First of the three quakes woke me up at 2:27am... house was shakin', doors banging etc.  First time I've ever felt one here in Auckland.  Wife was shitin' herself! 😲   But, all good now, no damage done anywhere and the "tsunami" concern that had folks headin' for the hills was only around 30cm in height so no big deal...

And, most importantly... no beer was harmed!   🤪

Human life is important of course as is personal property, but Beer - where do you put that on the priority list !!!

Well, interesting you should ask that question.  My wife genuinely asked a somewhat theoretical question after todays events regarding what i would do if it turned out that the earthquake/tsunami threat turned out to be REALLY serious, in a life-threatening way... what would be my priority?  What would be my first thoughts? 🤔   Of course I knew she was expecting/hoping that I would answer that I would without hesitation make her no1 priority, look out for her, make sure she was safe...  and indeed, as any good, decent, caring and loving husband would do of course.  Well, let' just say, based on my beer-related response, it seems I might not be such the good husband as she might have hoped...     😂

The bruise on my arm will hopefully fade away in a few days...

@BlackSands  I hope you realised I was attempting humour rather than anything else, I should have put a smiley face so you knew it was harmless. Good to hear you guys are safe & I can only imagine what it would be like in that situation. I have experienced terrible storms off the coast of Western Australia years ago but probably like a whirly wind compared to yours.

Cheers.
