Todays tastings

I'm not one for mixing exotic things in beer but I've always wanted to try an Oyster Stout. This apparently has Cowell Oysters and Shells in the grist. We'll I can't really taste Oysters in this but hell what a delicious stout. It's very smooth and tasty. Thick on the palate. A winter sipper. 11 out of 10.

Nothing like a pot with a handle that stains the glass the whole way. I had many of these today after lunch they were all beautiful.

Good old Melbourne bitter and the publican said would do me kegs for cost price around Christmas time 🥳

Melbourne Bitter on tap is a thing of beauty.

Looks like a fun night! I am also a member of the Western Sydney Brewers Facebook group. They had a meeting in Blacktown last night. I am looking forward to seeing some photos. Many of the members are younger than some of us - lots of hipster beards; but a very friendly group. They accepted that Dubbo was in the Western Sydney catchment area. One of these months I will make it down for a meeting.

Well, I agree, Dubbo is definitely West of Sydney.

It's a pretty broad spread of ages at the Mashers, and varying levels of experience, but they are quite friendly, too. It's great to not only get to taste other people's beers and learn about brewing but you can get really good feedback, too. Some of the members are BJCP qualified, others are just very experienced and I get much more detailed assessments than my friends can make.

A Dark, Dark Lager

I'm not into Lager but love a dark beer.

So what's the difference between Dark Lager and Dark Ale

apart from being lager and ale!

(I may have to brew one to compare)

If I can quote (or paraphrase) someone from last night commenting on my Bird of Prey American Lager:

"I can tell it's a lager, it's a bit cleaner and crisper."

I do like a dark lager but I wasn't overly impressed by Dainton's Dark, Dark Lager, TBH, but it was definitely a lager. It had that lager lightness and crispness.

Dunkels are dark lagers. Negra Modelo was probably the first dark lager I tried, many years ago,  Kozel Dark is one of my favourite dark lagers and is pretty easy to get hold of (from Dans).

I've got the Black Beard Schwarzbeir in the fermenter now.

Went on a  roadtrip to Marrickville today and between stacking up on some hop and grain at “Hop and Grain” and a delicious Japanese lunch at “Kurumac” we had a quick pit stop at “The Bob Hawke Beer and Leisure Centre”. Wifey hat a Pale Ale and a Lager and I went for an XPA and an Irish Stout. All beers were very nice and the Stout exceptional.

Nice people and a really nice store there at Hop and Grain but the parking especially on a weekday when the neighbouring industrial places are trading is f%^$d!!

I decided to buy a carton of this for the weekend, with all the inflated prices of packaged beer, this probably comes out in front as they are 500ml cans & it is a good beer.

I am sick of 4 x packs, shrinking bottle sizes so for similar money I get 12 litres of beer.

Love it as well, it’s my LHBS. You just park on the footpath in front

As far as I can work out Oettinger Pils is the biggest produced beer in Germany by volume, sort of like a mass produced Reinheitsgebot bier. To my taste, it is a little sweet and lacks a long lasting head. Not a terrible beer but certainly not a great beer, in my humble opinion.

Sort of like the megaswill of the best beer producing nation.

Well I like it in a cold glass.

I mainly buy it in between kegs but I wouldn't/couldn't drink it all of the time.

Good one AK, it is one of my favourite slurping beers in between brews, @kmar92 said he found it sweet & lacked a lasting head, I find the opposite, it is a great tasting well balanced beer & the head is always good for me.

I don't think I've ever poured that into a glass. It was always straight from the can.

Wherever possible I always pour into a glass, the visual is as good as the beer.

I do now that I've gained an elevated interest in the visual aspect but in years gone by I was happy to drink from a can or a bottle. Less washing up. Now, ironically, I wash the bottles as well as the glasses.
