Otto Von Blotto
There was something on TV yesterday? Oh, yeah... cars driving around a track for 10 hours. Yawwwwn I did a brew day on Saturday rather than yesterday, the 4th incarnation of my proper Bohemian Pils recipe. This time I made some slight adjustments to the hopping schedule, moving the 60g @ 20 mins back to 75g @ 10 mins. Will be interesting to see what impact this has when it's in the glass. Also managed to pretty much completely fill the cube this time by going back to a couple of old methods, including tilting the urn back at flameout to encourage the trub to settle more away from the tap outlet. There was still a crapload of trub from those pilsner grains but kept most of it out of the cube still. Next sack I'll get the 'normal' Bo Pils malt instead of the floor malted version and see if there's any difference in regard to this trub levels. All in all though it went well and this batch is next up in the FV after I keg the red ale next week. Cheers Kelsey
porschemad911
Tonight I brewed up the base beer for my kumquat hefeweizen. Feeling a bit too lazy to clean an extra bit of gear I went for a 90 minute full volume BIAB mash instead of a 60 minute batch-sparged mash in my cooler. I mashed at 66C, then did a 60 minute boil. The recipe was very simple as follows: 10.5 litre batch 1.25kg wheat malt 750g pilsner malt 250g munich malt 14g Hallertauer @FWH 12.8 IBUs Target OG 1.046 It is nice to be brewing again I have enjoyed a fine evening of drinking to accompany the brewing session ... starting off with a couple of bottles of my hoppy mid-strength ale, then on to a Coopers ESVA 2015 and a comparison with a bottle of my Old Ale, and then onto the Lagavulin ... antiphile
Lagavulin? No Oban or Laphroig? Another bloody heathen!
porschemad911
Haven't tried Oban (actually that is next on my 'to buy' list), but I definitely prefer Lagavulin to the Laphroaig that I have tried. Unfortunately there wasn't much left - my colleagues that came over to brew up the Oktoberfest a while back made short work of it!

Canadian Eh!L
Looks like a nice recipe, Ben. I've never heard of Dana hops, but I do like the malt bill. Pale and Munich make a good beer! It's pretty easy drinking for your usual brew at 1.052 and 28IBUs. That's right around my favourite range.

Hairy
Looks good Phil. But if you really want to join the club then you should dry hop it too.
antiphile
Funny you should say that, Hairy, because initially I thought of that (using Rakau) but realised there's only 5 grams of it left and didn't think it was worth the effort. And not being a frequent flyer in the dry hop department, I didn't know how any of the others would go. I've got plenty of all the others though, so I'm very open to suggestions. And even for which hops to use as well! Cheers my permed friend Phil
Hairy
I have one suggestion for you but this is a PG forum I have dry hopped with Mosaic with good results. I haven't tried Apollo before. If you have Mosaic then throw a heap in dry with 5g Rakau.
antiphile
OK. Consider it done. And don't be at all concerned that if it doesn't work out properly, I'll find where you live and hunt you down like a dog! So, what do you think? 5g rakau and 35g mosaic in 46 litres? antiphile
That woman must have a heart of gold to pick up a stray like yourself. So at 2:30 this morning I put two FVs (each with 25 litres) to bed. One will definately be dry hopped with rakau/mosaic as per your suggestion. Now I'm pondering whether to hit the other with either Vic Secret or Ella (possibly about 20 grams). What do you hop gurus think?

antiphile
Mon dieu! 4g/L dry hop! You must wash down whole jalapenos with tabasco sauce for breakfast. And I'm proud to be a big girl. Going to Thailand for a boob job soon. I might see you there when you're having that third testicle removed.

Beerlust
Hi guys. Simple brew day today. Just another crack at the recipe I listed in Post#685 of this thread. The yeast will be pitched much earlier. Cheers, Lusty.

Otto Von Blotto
Mosaic went well as a dry hop in my latest pale ale that is currently on tap. I threw in 35g into a 22ish litre batch. That being said, it was the only hop used in that recipe other than a little Magnum for bitterness.
Beerlust
Hi Antsi. Hmm. 80 g dry' date=' huh? So are you a Sriracha sauce or Devil's Delerium fan?[/quote']If you're going to include me in the newly uncovered hybridization status of your good self, then you'll need to embrace higher dry hopping levels with APA's/IPA's. I like your last posted recipe btw. Nice mix of hop varieties that bring something different but complimentary to the table. I haven't used Apollo before & to be honest have only noticed it being used predominantly for bittering, so how much of the grapefruit surfaces in flavour/aroma should be interesting. For big grapefruit, nothing goes past Riwaka (IMHO). For sheer bang for your buck, Vic Secret is a super hop for use in dry hopping due to its high oil content above everything else. For those wishing to impart solid aroma into their beer without having to throw exorbitant volumes of hops at the dry hopping stage, then take the time to look at the oil content of the hops you are considering. When it comes to dry hopping, oil content is something worth considering as it is these oils that gently leech into your beer to give it the aroma you are looking for. Cheers & good brewing, Lusty.
