a smidge under 85000 at the mcg tonight to watch the dees beat the tigers and to remember those that have served in the wars on ANZAC Day eve. melbourne put on a great night weatherwise too, still, calm and only a light jacket required.

Tassie Tassie Tassie oi oi oi. Although I wish they would get started sooner and use existing stadiums.  Build a new one in a better spot with good parking.

The gold coast being a team before Tassie was a big joke and waste of money.

i'm really happy to see both the new tassie team come in and the new stadium as part of the deal too. tasmania is going to gain a state of the art multi purpose arena with a roof and this will drive a lot of tourist dollars down. it's not just the location it's the infrastructure (from change rooms to food outlets to wifi and toilets etc); it's harder and more expensive to do a reno than to start anew and tassie is going to get a venue that's 21st century, more modern than the dome in melbourne or the new stadium in perth. exciting time.

no roof from what I heard that's the thing and the windgers saying about the wind. not much different than Melbourne when she blows a bit. just a bit further south. Still in a stupid part with no parking etc. and bad public transport. For anyone who knows hobart it will be a pain unless planning something in secret.

I thought the roof was to protect from rain rather than wind.

i beg to differ , i know Hobart very well  and where the new stadium will be and will work.  its a very short walk from cbd and Salamanca  10 minute wall from Elizabeth street mall.   Plenty of Accommodation with 5 minutes of the stadium.   the argument around parking  well the MCG and Marvel have shocking parking  around it and they no longer park on the grounds of the mcg

1 of the Afl conditions was that the new stadium will have a roof.  we all know that  what the afl wants the afl gets.

now  the weather we all have gone soft in this world ,  AFL is a Winter sport and used to be played in all kinds of weather  can remember seeing alot of vfl games growing up that was just mud baths and none of those footy players cried because it was a mud bath they played in everything in the open weather and not under  roofs..

This  Tasmanian side has had better planning and infrastructure to support it , back in the early 90's when they last bided for a license they basically only had Cantrells Paddock (not many would know this oval under that name) which was North Hobart and that ground couldn't be upgraded  and was looking at the old  Trotting Track  in Elwick, Glenorchy  which was the show grounds

having the stadium at macquarie point is a great spot ,   using the old rail yard docks , the only unfortunate thing is  which will devastate  us craft beer lovers is that the Hobart brewing Co will have to move  and the funny thing is their building was where the 1st incat was built  before they moved out to  Derwent park precent next to zinc works .

however this will produce jobs  as the area   doesn't just have to offer football  .  Bellerive  couldn't  be upgrade as i believe cricket Australia owns or has the lease  and you couldn't upgrade it as the stands are already on the boundaries you can't  add  lighting for night games due to the residential area of the ground

parking was at premium  public transport was very difficult   at Bellerive .

unfortunately the attitude of Tasmania is pretty pour   as the stadium was always going to divide the state   as the nw tassie whinge  its to far   those in the north whinge then if it was to be in the north  the south whinges .    you put it in the centre  which would look  out of place  it then makes it difficult for mainlanders ..

tasmania just needs to embrace this  and forget about where a stadium to be built as there will not be a second team from Tasmania  no matter  that the other states part from vic have 2 teams..

anyway just my 2 bobs

It will have a roof, there was a bit of talk about ICC regulations preventing test matches etc. from being played under a roof, but there is no such rule or condition anywhere in the ICC rules.

I'm a bit divided on roofed stadia. On one hand wet weather footy is pretty ordinary to watch with all the fumbling and scrappy play, but I will often watch afternoon Marvel games at night because it just looks wrong playing under lights with a yellow ball in the middle of the afternoon.

In any case, Tasmania should have been in before Gold coast or GWS in my view. Hopefully they come up with a better jumper than that god awful orange training singlet the suns wear 🤮

You beat me to the point, Oz. Visited there about 18 months ago. Was a pretty cool place to have a beer. I hope they find a good alternative home.

@ozdevil sounds like you should be the Tas Devil and take on warner bros for naming rights if they think Tas is too similar to Taz. I have to admit I have read so many articles old and new I think I got a bit mixed up. For some reason I thought the roof was too expensive for them, you blokes have obviously kept more updated than me.

Yeah the buses have got better over the years compared to when I grew up so I suppose if they chucked on a few extra for game day it would be doable.  And yes you will never keep everyone happy but the stadium should defiantly be in or close to Hobart. The north needs to learn who the capital is and who runs the show 😉

Yes Hobart brew co make good beers and their fire pits are good for cold days etc. Lookin good @Malter White

I still  hate the thought of waiting so long and can't see why they cant get a team sooner and just play at Blunstone or Uni of Tas like have been in day games. 5 years is soo long its 2023 where you can watch a whole season of a show on Netflix the day it comes out.  I have no patience they have dangled the carrot and I want it NOW!

It's a fairly rustic set up there, Phil, so I fitted into the surroundings quite comfortably. I wish we could have spent more time there.

Yeah, give me rustic any day, I love the old wood fires, wooden beams, & good beer & food in an older style converted barn, better than all of the stainless steel, glass & head banging music.

and theme song as well.

i do like the GWS theme but the Gold Coast one sounds like a watered down Port Power outtake.

fun fact: you can substitute 'teenage mutant ninja turtles' into the GWS theme and it makes as much sense as the original.

I think the GWS song resembles Buble's Sway.

There's only one stadium played under a roof in Australia ( AFL ) and is probably the worse surface of all.

The rest are all open air. Its the much better ground drainage these days that has stopped the mud baths of old.

i agree marvel is a crap place   and shocking surface .  and agree the rest are open and better drainage today then what was back then but they was also tougher footy players as well haha

however , 1 thing i do know   , if they build this stadium with out a roof   and a southerly brews from antartica and there is night game  you will freeze ya balls off    as a southerly coming straight up the Derwent   its going to effect macquarrie point and the new stadium is smack bang in the way of a southerly buster .

if you remember those aliminium seats at west lakes in Adelaide how fricken cold they got mark my words it will  be 6 times worse then west lakes..

This is why  the need for a roof .   i know  Hobart very  well @Pale Man  and i have spent many hours fishing  of the wharves back then when you was aloud to   and froze my knackers off...

i dont think   buses will be necessary except for those doing the run back up north .  i think shuttles  to the city  will just be a hindrance  and will be quicker to walk into cbd

not many mainland footy tourists will be  staying on the Eastern Shore  as most will be staying with in the city limits or the round house  and the pubs around Salamanca   will  definitely benefit from the new oval  as soon as a game finishes  and the die hards heading to casino  may just want to pub crawl it down there

I think Freo takes the cake for the worst team song in the AFL though, and the Eagles one sounds like an 80s rock band. For me Richmond and Sydney have the best ones.

Since we're doing interesting facts (or maybe this would also fit in the Useless Information thread), the GWS song was written by a guy from The Cat Empire. Most of the old clubs theme songs are rip offs of traditional, triumphal songs.

I don't know who wrote the Freo song but if it was me I wouldn't go around telling anybody about it. I don't think I've ever heard the Sun's song.

Yes day game leaving plenty of time for all the drunk and excited or sad people, time to get home before dark is much better.

As for not releasing the full fixture giving people time to plan. Especially for interstate trips ETC is one of the things annoying me about the AFl this year. I wanted to plan early for a brisbane trip during school holidays but arent sure what day to book to come home as the times and days are not yet complete.

Its almost like the AFL is stuck in Covid mode when even the NRL can release a full fixture.  This is one of the things putting me off AFL this year along with all the Rule changes and complaining about fans booing ETC. I went to a rugby game last week and everyone had a good old boooooo and going off if things didn't go their way. It was still a safe happy atmosphere and no one got upset about it.

my veiw on the booing is that it's nuanced, as in there are different kinds. my take is roughly

the deserved - player x did something dirty in game or last year

the theatrical - player x left our club or did something shifty last week/recently and got away with it

the undeserved - true champions of the game like what has happened in the past and recently with buddy

i'll leave that at that

as for the draw, i'm totally with you on how not releasing the draw in full makes planning impossible, especially if it involves interstate travel. last round of the year is the swannies v demons and i'd like to see the game and visit my sister, but also not hang around too long so i'd like to be able to plan that now.

@Stickers with regards to buddy I think he gets the booooo more because of being an umpires pet than a great player. It's definitely not racist the fact he tries to play that card makes him an idiot. I'm indigenous myself and it's certainly not that.

He has multiple times full punched people and been lucky  to get a week ban. A few times he got nothing or a fine.

If the AFL was serious regards punching they would be tough on the action itself not the result.  How many jumper punches or gut punches go without nothing? They all still hurt you can do it or can't. That's why I hate buddy.  I'm also starting to dislike a game I have loved for years because of all the off field nonsense and debates over silly things.

Start telling people they can't go to a game and booo who they want when they want and see how many keep going.

It's called passion for the game and you're club.  How many times at a game do you hear the stadium scream BALL! 2 seconds before the bloke has been tackled? That's the reason I go to a game rather than watch it on tv

To be honest I'm sick of the booing. I understand it when someone's done something grubby and the usual lining up for goal, or the moved clubs theatrics, but all these muppets booing players for no real reason every time they go near the ball and then coming up with the lame excuse of trying to put the player off is absolute BS. In all my time watching footy I've never heard random booing like that other than the reasons above, until this year. The idiots from other clubs who had nothing to do with the Horne Francis situation are even worse. Just shut up with it already 🙄
