Robinson's Iron Maiden Trooper Shinjitsu Sun & Steel, a double fermented, sake infused Japanese Rice Lager

Another pickup from the Purvis WoB half price barrel.

This one is full of surprises. From the malty aroma to the slightly fruity taste with a mild sake flavour coming through at the end this is quite nice.

I just kegged a rice lager today and I am anticipating sampling it in a few days, and looking forward to that. 🤣

I haven't had a gin IPA before. This was good. The IPA and gin both came through. Cool for a tasting and an "Ah, yeah - I see what they are doing" but not something I'd regularly drink. I'd prefer an IPA and gin and tonic separately.

I know what you mean. Generally I prefer to have my boozes served in different glasses.

thanks to @Kegoryi have the hawker's trio of dips to sample

the premise is a good one, take the same base but dryhop it with cascade from three different parts of the world, nz, the usa and the uk

a public holiday eve seemed a great excuse to sample, i'm dubbing tonight the kegory klassic as i've also got one of his own brews to sample after this.

anyway..

usa (right) - which seems to be the one my LHBS stocks tastes a bit too similar to the hawker's west coast ipa, a beer that's occasionally in the work fridge for friday beer o'clock and always feels a bit too much.

uk - (middle) - this one is my favourite but it's really hard to articulate why

nz (left) - the one that packed the most hop punch when i sniffed the can. closer in taste to the uk one to my untrained palate but i've preferred the uk one so far

time to finish these, have a couple of glasses of water and come back to how they've matured!

It was a big night at Burnley Brewing for the Merri Mashers September meeting.

At Burnley Brewing Oktoberfest begins in September. That's fine by me.

While I was at the bar getting that one the official business of the meeting started. Most of that consisted of handing out the awards from VicBrew 2023. Brian needed a box to carry his home, he'd won six awards (engraved beer glasses, of course) including Best Beer and Best Brewer. He'd been surprised by that as most of those brews hadn't even placed at earlier competitions. That goes to show what a little aging can do for a beer.

After that the head brewer gave us some tastings and a talk about various aspects of the brewing. I correctly identified the Marzen (on the right), feeling very proud of myself, despite not having tasted one before, but somehow failed to pick the Weizen as the Kristall version. Our table was engaged in an interesting discussion about the banana and clove notes at the time, though, and how fermentation temperature causes the yeast to express them.

We also tasted the Leipziger Gose and the Scwarzbeir.

The rest of the evening mainly consisted of trying each other's homebrews although I did get a pint of the German IPA (I had to know) and a can of the Schwarzbeir to take home.

Sounds like a good night. 🍻 It's good to talk brewing with other brewers.

It was. It's great getting specific feedback, too, other than the "that's nice" I get from friends and family. A few of them are trained BJCP judges and the others who've been around for a while are used to having their beers critiqued by trained judges so the feedback is pretty good.

It seems I was mistaken. I thought we were starting Oktoberfest early in Melbourne but thanks to the wonders of hyper text transfer protocol and the World Wide Web I discovered today that the 118th Munchen Oktoberfest runs from the 16th of September until the 3rd of October. So, in the spirit of the world's largest folk festival:

Weihenstephaner Pils (I don't think I've posted this one before)

IMG_20230929_190434695.thumb.jpg.778282ace9d2394c4df218614cb1d799.jpg

Brauerei Fruh am Dom Kolsch (the famous lager-like ale)

IMG_20230929_200652633.thumb.jpg.e5f865f6dba1f59fb9968ec949ada4a8.jpg

Ayinger Fruhingsbeir

IMG_20230929_211108451.thumb.jpg.cadb87a9c88660f82cf997c24bd2987f.jpg

This, apparently, is a Dortmunder Export Lager. I had one (Dortmunder Export Lager styled beer) last night night at Burnley Brewers and, yeah, definitely, they are very similar beers. This one maybe has a hint more sulphur on the nose but, according to Randy Mosher in the video I posted in the What Are You Drinking thread last week, the sense of smell can be completely overwhelmed and effectively nullified in a noisy environment (I definitely experienced that at the GABS festival, I can see that now in retrospect) and Burnley Brewing definitely had a reasonably high level of ambient/background noise.

Today I visited the Devil's Hollow Brewery in Dubbo for lunch and beer tasting.  On my tasting paddle from left to right were a 'Sundowner' Belgian Wit Bier,  'The Commotion' XPA,  the 'Sandy Beach' Belgian Blonde, and an 'Anonymous' New England IPA.  These were my choices out of eleven beers on tap. Lots of spice, fruit, hoppy aromas and flavours across the four; but all were very different,  and all were very enjoyable. On the brewery website there is a much fuller description of each beer with ABV, IBU, grains and hops listed.
