Craft Beer Prices - Getting Expensive or Just Me?

Many moons ago I worked in a sports club on the Gold Coast. One of the board members there would drink nothing but XXXX heavy. There was a really slow Monday night I was working in there so I cleaned the beer lines in the main bar, kept the smaller gaming bar open because the place was pretty much dead. The old bugger turns up and wants a beer, but the beer lines were already emptied and all soaking in cleaner and the smaller bar didn't have XXXX heavy.

I've never seen someone spit the dummy like he did.

I offered the stubborn fella a stubby of his precious drop instead, but he just carried on like a spoilt kid and wouldn't drink anything else on offer.  He then walked out, having a blow up to the manager on the way.

Seriously, life is too short and there's too many other awesome beers around these days to be so set in your ways. I couldn't believe it. It's not even a nice beer at the best of times.

Megaswill will never be scarce. When I go out for a beer somewhere I want to see a tap or 2 at least, with something a bit different on offer. I think if licenced venues only offer your stock standard XXXX, VB, Carlton, etc they're just selling themselves short.

I worked in a local micro brewery as well. Used to hate the same old saying from so many blokes "what have you got that tastes like Carlton Dry?"

Was so hard not to tell them to far cough around the corner to the local dive.

That stubby poured into a glass wouldn't have tasted any different to a glass poured from the tap either.

Carlton dry would have to be my new worst megaswill ever. At least from.the ones I've had. Had to power through some in Vic earlier this year, I might as well have had soda water with a bit of sugar and yellow food colouring in it. Bloody awful shit, I don't think a hop went anywhere near it.

I used to drink it back in the days of uni and when it was called Carlton Premium Dry. That was before I educated myself via Thomas Cooper's handy work and onwards from there ?

Had some about 18 months ago. Rotten hangover. Tasted like water. Never again.

When I visit the in-laws in Qld I always buy my own grog because all they drink is great northern.

Not sure if anyone has already mentioned this one but if you're looking for a cheap, easy drinking, commercial beer I've been enjoying Arc Valley premium lager from Dan's when I'm out of home brew.
Only $36 a slab, probably cheaper outside SA because we have 10c container deposit here.
Small 330ml bottles but ounce for ounce still cheap compared to other 375ml brands.
4.8% ABV. Much rather drink this than a midstrength of a similar price.

I think that Arc Valley tastes similar to Southwark premium lager, if you're familiar with that one. That's the Southwark in the green bottle, not to be confused with the bitter that used have a green label and was nicknamed Green Death. ?
I'm in Adelaide so interstaters might not be familiar.

Southwark, or southick green death is quite possibly the worst beer I have ever tried

Captain

It probably is but as I said don't confuse Southwark premium lager with the much maligned, green death Southwark bitter.

Never heard of it. I'll try it one day. There's some surprisingly good reviews of those Tun beers on uncle Dan's website too. Can't see myself trusting them too much though...

I think I'll wait until there's a good review of TUN on this website before I dare try it. Rather than rely on Dan's reviews, which have possibly been posted by Dan or TUN employees.

Or megaswill drinkers. Most of the people I see in there are carrying out slabs of New or VB or XXXX Gold or some other flavorless crap. I looked on Ratebeer, the reviews were much less favorable. A few mentioned that it was slightly better since it started being brewed in Belgium instead of the USA though.

Blue tins, green tins, yellow tins, red tins (west end draught).

That being said Kelsey you're probably the first Qlder I've heard of that doesn't rate XXXX gold or that other northern beer which is not that "great".

I reckon my kegged soda water has more flavor than XXXX Gold. It's terrible. The full strength isn't much better normally but I'd drink it every day over Gold if I had to choose between them. It's a bit better out of the wooden kegs at the Brekky Creek pub though (full strength that is).

Having grown up in Germany up to the tender age of 21 and having been back there probably more than 20 times over the years I found it very difficult to get used to the price of beer here. Now i have travelled the world and enjoyed a lot of beers in different countries because when you are there it's also the surroundings, the people you are with, the local climate and the food that makes you totally enjoy the local brews. That's why I also (forgive me now) enjoyed an icy cold VB here in summer at the barbie. I did however after some years miss a good quality beer in one of my German beer mugs and started to make my own just like all of you here. I am not yet kegging and only make pretty simple kit beers like Coopers Pale Ale and the like and found that with a little care regarding cleanliness and using LDM instead of dextrose, you can produce your own beer that tastes miles better than any of theme swills around.

Whenever I run out of my own and I have to go to DM I usually pick a carton of Öttinger or if I can afford it at the time a Weihenstephaner Weißbier or Dunkles. At least they come in 500ml size. I do not like any of these small 330ml or so bottles and just don't buy them even so I believe that some of them might be quite nice. Just way too expensive.

Yes Otto I remember in my early days in Brisbane when I worked for a Toolshop a few doors down from the Brekky Creek we went there every Friday for a session and a meal in the Spanish Garden. That beer of the wood was very nice. A long time ago, 1982      -------      Yes I also find XXXX "Gold" terrible

Last week I found myself low on beer. So as mentioned above I grabbed a slab of Arc Valley from Dan. It was $32.99 not $36 as I thought. One thing I failed to mention was it comes in green bottles with no thread for the caps ie. ideal for crown seals. Personally, I'm happy to continue using PET bottles but thought I should share the info.
Are green bottles taboo for home brew?

I've been pretty stunned at the cost of beers at the old Dan Murphy's, having not really had to hit them up for a while. $20+ for six-packs of almost anything drinkable is depressing. I think that joint's starting to exploit its reputation for decent prices, because they're far from it these days. Even the boutique cellars up the road offer a few options that compete, even if it's a bit esoteric.

But yeah, in general, craft beers are too exy to justify for anything but special occasions. My ploy is to cook the food and ask mates to bring the beer. Works well... As long as you know the right people...

Yep, beer is getting expensive. Partly, I blame the whole craft brew 'revolution' of the last decade or so - taxes goes without saying. What it's really meant is smaller sized bottles at premium prices. The brewers have made it work for them a bit better product than mass bland fizz to sell at bigger profit.

Now we're in a phase of micro brewers making it in commercial terms, and mediocre beer is everywhere. I have a local family run bottle o that specialises in craft and micro and $25 for 4 is common. There's some good brews, but I'm finding the market saturated with Meh. I love a pale, but really do we need yet another one? This seems to be the only thing most are doing.

Growing up in a beautiful Czech republic i was brought up on in my opinion one of the best beers in the world. (I still think that). When i visited again in 2015 i completely forgot how affordable beer is over there. 500 ml glass or even a beer on tap will cost you an avarage $1.50 AUD and its definitely not a crap beer like NEW, VB,DRY etc. Beer is sometimes cheaper than bottled water ..... what a great times ..... and i took it all for granted growing up...

You can imagine how i felt the fitst time i tasted the local beers. Arrived back in 2009 and first beer i had was a schooner of NEW in the closest pub and i couldnt believe how bad it was. Next one i tried was the 3 longnecks pack of VB ..... long story short i couldnt finish it at all and it made me feel very ill ......

Thank god for craft beer and import. Later i discoveted DM and was saved for a bit.

At the moment when i am out of homebrew i pick up some nice craft from DM or the French Sainte Etienne lager in Aldi ... $29 for a 24 pack and it goes down ok for an ok price .... sometimes i treat myself with a bit of Heineken, Stella or Grolsh(and get to keep the bottle).

Prices of beer in Oz are simply ridiculous....

Yes, prices here are a joke. Mostly due to taxes, as the govt can easily justify excessive consumption as a health concern. Like most complicated issues, they just add a tax and avoid trying to really deal with it.

I won't buy Stella or Heineken anymore, they have joined the watery swill category, at a premium price. The originals aren't bad, but we get the locally brewed versions, which are noticeably worse. I had a Heineken after a game of golf yesterday and it was indistinguishable from any other locally brewed tap beer I could have had.
