Yeast is a fungus. Fungi are generally the sort of thing you're trying to kill in horticulture.[lol] Yes I know it requires an optimum temperature and I'm fully aware of trees losing leaves. Warm season grasses do exactly the same thing, they still grow, but you only need to mow them once every 2 months because it's so slow. Same as cool season grasses drop off in summer. Obviously I'm familiar with cleaning equipment too from all the spraying and fertilising we used to do. And don't kid yourself, turf is bloody technical when you're looking after things like golf courses or bowling greens. That's why they're employed full time and do a 4 year apprenticeship. Yes, there are similarities with brewing (temp/growing and cleaning).

The thing is, you don't need a diploma in horticulture to grow yeast or brew beer, and I think the way it comes across is that because you know all this stuff about horticulture that somehow you've got an advantage over the rest of us. That may not be what you're trying to say, but it is the way it comes across.

I could be wrong but anyway, I look at it this way.....

Even though they may cross over some info but:

one can become an apprentice brewer and one can become an apprentice horticulturist which leads me to believe they are two completely different specialised occupations.

Just because one person is qualified as a Horticulturist, or a brewer, does not necessarily mean they know much about the other. Yes, some info is crossed over but no different than a motor mechanic to a refrigeration mechanic or a butcher to a slaughterman.

Now I say the following in due respect to everyone here but, I feel these forums are becoming to much of a comparison all the time lately to horticulture when it is a different industry. These are brewing forums, if people want to consistently talk about horticulture then I suggest go to the respective forums and sprout your knowledge there.

I'm just a silly old frt, but i love fermenting, and even better, drinking the results.

Scientifically speaking, learning about yeast, the different strains, and how it is best manipulated with temperature control, nutrients and essential elements to produce a product is as much fun as making and drinking your results, (well.... almost as much fun as drinking).

What I do know, is that there is always more to learn.

I totally agree Stephen.

I just think the learning and sharing of information should be done in a collaborative manner rather than confrontational.

I use amber LME that I buy in 566g jar from the supermarket health food aisle. It's organic, it's probably food grade, it's what I've been using in most of my beers for over a year now. I know that some (not all[annoyed] ) are amazing brews.

So, food grade vs. brewing grade malt? Come on![roll] does it really matter? I find that being a fanatical homebrewer in a small town it's best to be resourceful. If food grade, organic LME in 566g jar is all you got then brew with it[rightful] [wink]

Stoobrew,

You are a wild one. I say keep it up![bandit] It's all in fun I'm sure.

I normally add flavouring hops and grain juice too my beers. Every bit of malt, except for the kit. Wouldn't matter what wild yeast or nastys are floating about as I would have killed them.

Aha!

I have always wondered why you had 566g amber malt in your recipes. It seemed like an odd amount to measure out but now I understand.

Thats good; I don't think you are weird anymore [biggrin]

Wow so yeast is a plant...hilarious[devil]...thanks mate, honestly before I reply to anything else I'll just say a weed is anything you DONT want growing where it is..that is the horticultural term of a weed [bandit]

Ok fellas...I must point out one other thing! I like coopers home brew :) I like coopers beer, unfortunately for some...and killer for others I actually was the reason for the new record of 86 people being logged in at once! I just wanted to blether everyone took it differently and thats what forums are for! I'm sorry if Im pushing the horticulture, but ive now learnt yeast is a fungi...so horticulture and beer brewing have come from the same place originally. However it is the internet so you do get your occasional crazies! Honestly I have not been brewing for that long and I'm amazed at all the knowledge that is floating around I'm just trying to join the dots for everyone [alien] not being qualified to do so and that has been pointed out plenty :) And I also know how to brew beer far better than I did when I started this thread...thanks to everyone who has included to this your all legends in your own right!! Once again I'm sorry if I upset anyone, its all about learning for me tho [biggrin]

Stoo mate, No offence but I'm not sure how you have actually enlightened us with any new information at all? What I just want is the taste comparison, the OG & FG readings, etc...! Being scientific you'd know it's all in the results! [biggrin]

With all this interest and sprouting off about malts you should be step mashing AND knowing why you are doing it [rightful]

You are yet to give me any insightful and helpful tips Stoo'pd

I await the cross references to Venus Fly Traps being from Mars and how that relates to me reaching terminal gravity with Venusian Double Headed Queen Bee Honey

As I said, fungi are not plants.

This is from wiki, and a similar version exists on quite a few other sites as well:

A fungus (ˈfʌŋɡəs/; plural: fungi[3] or funguses[4]) is a member of a large group of eukaryotic organisms that includes microorganisms such as yeasts and molds (British English: moulds), as well as the more familiar mushrooms. These organisms are classified as a kingdom, Fungi, which is separate from plants, animals, and bacteria.

There you have it. Yeast is not a plant.

I think he gets the point... no point trying to bag someone who is trying to expand their knowledge and by the sounds of it I am sure he understands that at the expense of others it is not welcome.

Everyone should just get on with it now.
