Classic Brewing Co Posted May 31 Share Posted May 31 I just found out my one of my neighbours/drinking buddies has been admitted to hospital to undergo Open Heart Surgery, a month ago he had a stent put in as he was experiencing chest pains & a couple of days ago, he was back for another episode but apparently it was unsuccessful hence the Triple Bypass. Scary stuff, I have been blessed with good health & always worked out, walks, healthy eating etc. & at my age wonder why people younger & others older have all of these problems. Apparently, a lot has to do with lifestyle, eating habits, indulgences etc. but as a homebrewer & a lover of fine ales, I just enjoy a few beers these days rather than overindulge (apart from the unexpected visitors, BBQ, Happy Hours, all types of weather days, birthdays, fishing etc.) I am told alcohol is pretty much a no-no in the early days of recovery, so I wish him well, he does enjoy a drink. Never been a smoker and have always had reasonable fitness. Last heart check I had i was told I have the heart of a 20 year old. I havent had a liver check, could be scary. My old man is 74 and drinks home brew every single day, his liver is fine. Not to say mine is but hopefully his genes are strong in me. I dont drink every day, but when i do I tend not to hold back. He's been a lifelong smoker, with the odd break here and there but was never a particularly big drinker. He enjoyed a Whisky here and there but only drank the occasional beer. Food was probably an issue too, although he lived vegetarian for a good 20 years, only eating fish, before going back to eating meat. He's never been overweight and is a keen cyclist and has kept fit that way, which is what makes me a little worried. However, he did have a heart condition he was apparently born with but didn't know until he was well in his 30s. I'd been smoking fairly heavily for more than 35 years, always liked mo booze, I eat more than I should and the only exercise I get is when we take the dog for a sniff. You can't call it a walk what doggo does. The operation was Tuesday, it was successful & I have spoken to his wife a couple of times & she says it all seems OK so far according to the Doctors/Specialist. He will be in for a bit longer as they have private health insurance, so I guess I will know more when I am told.
