joolbag
Looks good @The Captain1525230099. My cube hops have gone from 40g up to the biggest recently at 110g. Can say you lost a fair bit of wort to absorption with 110g! I did squeeze as much as possible out too. I was following a recipe where 110g was at sub-80C whirlpool steep, so cube hopping is the only way to do it with my set up (no chiller). I like Mosaic a lot and Riwaka I'm just dabbling with but from what I can taste, I like it. Bitter fruit flavour, maybe a hint of pineapple? I can see this working with Mosaic well. Keep us posted mate (i know you will) Jools

joolbag
Welcome to the dark side. It was only a matter of time and one of my friends gives me great feedback on my beers. His love is with the dark beers and has been begging me for months to brew something dark for him. I settled on a porter. This is from the BYO robust porter page and the first recipe on the list. Black Widow Robust Porter. Brewer: Jools Batch Size: 22.40 l Style: American Porter (20A) Boil Size: 30.00 l Style Guide: BJCP 2015 Color: 57.8 EBC Equipment: Pot (13 Gal/33 L) - BIAB Bitterness: 32.8 IBUs Boil Time: 60 min Est OG: 1.064 (15.6° P) Mash Profile: Single Infusion, Light Body, No Mash Out Est FG: 1.014 SG (3.6° P) Fermentation: Ale, Two Stage ABV: 6.5% Taste Rating: 30.0 Ingredients Amount Name Type # 0.50 Campden Tablet (Potassium Metabisulfate) (Mash 0 min) Misc 1 5.20 kg Gladfield Ale Malt (6.0 EBC) Grain 2 600.0 g Gladfield Munich Malt (15.5 EBC) Grain 3 400.0 g Caramel/Crystal Malt - 40L (78.8 EBC) Grain 4 300.0 g Chocolate Malt (689.5 EBC) Grain 5 200.0 g Black (Patent) Malt (985.0 EBC) Grain 6 42.0 g Styrian Goldings [3.0%] - Boil 60 min Hops 7 22.0 g East Kent Goldings (EKG) [5.0%] - Boil 60 min Hops 8 20.0 g Fuggles [5.2%] - Boil 15 min Hops 9 0.50 Whirlfloc Tablet (Boil 10 min) Misc 10 18.0 g East Kent Goldings (EKG) [5.0%] - Steep 30 min Hops 11 10.0 g Styrian Goldings [3.0%] - Steep 30 min Hops 12 1 pkgs Safale American (DCL/Fermentis #US-05) Yeast 13 Brewday went well, even with the big grain bill I got 73.4% efficiency. The boil off was higher than I've ever experienced because I brewed in the shelter of the shed, out of the wind. So my OG was 1.072 in 20.4L. I'll dilute with water down to 1.064 when I pitch this cube.
The Captain!!
Looks like a cracking beer there Jools. Thats a fair amount of choc and black in there too mate, going to be nice a roasty. Also top efficiency for that big of a grain bill. Well done. Captain
joolbag
I was struggling with my efficiency until lately used to get 70-75% when I had grain milled by the LHBS, but it had dropped to 62.5-65% when I got my own mill. A mashmaster mini mill too! I have made a couple of positive changes in the last two brews and it has brought my efficiency back up. I made the grind a bit finer, but I don’t think that was the key. I’ve recently started double milling. The first crush left a few unbroken grains. Second crush sorted it out and it was consistent and all cracked, but not crushed like flour. need a new grain bag. the combination of a big grain bill, squeezing the bag and it being over a year old has split it at the seams. $7 once a year I can live with! porschemad911
Monday night I brewed up a 1.080 OG Doppelbock, then a 1.050 OG Nelson Sauvin amber lager with the second runnings (final recipes attached). It was a bit of a long brew evening - I mashed in on the Doppelbock at 8pm and finished up the second runnings beer just before 2am. After a 60 minute mash, the first runnings for the Doppelbock came in a little under the target gravity, but a little over the target volume, so I boiled for 90 minutes to hit the 1.080 target. This meant that the second runnings batch continued to mash for another 90 minutes (with a bit of new grain in the mix), and so the gravity on the second runnings was a bit higher than expected. In hindsight it might have been better to have planned a 90 minute mash on the Doppelbock. But never mind that, I definitely call having 10 litres of 1.080 Doppelbock fermenting in my Coopers Craft fermenter and 8 - 9 litres of another 1.050 lager fermenting in my cube a success. Good thing they both fit into my Cool Brewing Bag nicely. But I probably won't do another partigyle batch for a while, only having one boil kettle makes for a fairly late night. porschemad911
Nice work Ben! I don't think my Doppelbock has much chance of having the same effect. Well unless I give up food for the month like the monks did. Not sure how work would go with that though. Cheers, John
