King Ruddager
Hah, hi guys, didn't see this thread sorry. I usually check in daily but haven't been paying much attention lately, and beer's fallen off the radar a little but I threw a BBQ on Saturday so I now have some ground to make up and need to get brewing again
Magnaman
I threw a BBQ on Saturday Question "Your Kingship" is this some sort of South Australian twist on the Highland games and throwing BBQ's replaces the caber toss ? cheers.

King Ruddager
So, anyone want to suggest a nice malt base for a pale?
CaffeinatedSentryGnome
I threw a BBQ on Saturday Question "Your Kingship" is this some sort of South Australian twist on the Highland games and throwing BBQ's replaces the caber toss ? cheers. Normally BBQs are thrown to show the drop bears who is boss. if you don't regularly show a signs of strength and brutality the drop bears in the area get a bit keen and try to invade your territory. BBQs are normally thrown during the warmer months when the drop bears are most active. sometimes it is required to throw a BBQ mid week if the drop bears are particularly active. when throwing a BBQ its also required to make as much noise as possible, this makes the BBQ throwing seem better than it really is. Otto Von Blotto
I normally use about 85% Maris Otter (any pale malt will do though), and about 10% and 5% of Munich II and medium crystal respectively. That's for American pales, my English ones vary a bit from that.

King Ruddager
... and about 10% and 5% of Munich II and medium crystal respectively. Munich and medium crystal - exactly the answer I was hoping for
Otto Von Blotto
No worries mate. I have used wheat malt in them in the past but I must admit I prefer them without it. I find that malt bill gives a nice backbone to the beer and is an excellent base for hop experiments as well.
King Ruddager
Would you believe I haven't yet made an AG pale. That is, unless you count Smashs, and I don't. Smash is Smash. Anyway, I ended up with regular ale malt because the LHBS was out of Marris Otter, and BRY-97 because they're out of US-05. I also ordered cascade and amarillo hops ... good times ahead. King Ruddager
Looks like I'm going to have an OG around 1.044 too for what it's worth, so according to this chart I ought to have a BU:GU ratio of 0.71 (for an American pale), which means 31 IBUS which ... sounds high actually. Hmmmmm ...
Otto Von Blotto
31 IBUs is in low territory for me. I normally brew my pale ales to somewhere around 37-40 IBUs. But it's a bit of personal preference involved there too I suppose.
