jennyss
Thanks @Brauhaus Fritzfor letting us know: I just watched the segment on Landline from the Sunday 2.4.23 episode about the hop industry in Australia. The story focussed on the Ellerslie Hops farm in NE Victoria. Apparently they have a long association with Coopers. It was very interesting to see the hops being harvested, and part of the processing. Apparently 40% of Australian hop production is used in Australia; the rest goes overseas. German companies have a big ownership stake in Australian hop production. Despite the rapidly expanding demand for, and making of craft beer with new flavours, only 10% of hop production goes to craft breweries. Also no mention of the home brew section of the hop market. Australian Galaxy hops got a big rap. I was waiting to hear something about where and how hop pellets are made; but the segment finished with no mention of pellets! jennyss
Me again - After my last post about the Landline segment on hops, I started thinking 'so where are hop pellets made in Australia?' I googled that question and came up with interesting information about Hop Products Australia's new pellet plant in Victoria.... in an old tobacco processing factory! https://craftypint.com/news/2970/hpa-invest-in-major-new-pellet-plant

We also source hops from HPA. Primarily Galaxy and Simcoe that are used in the blue and purple cans respectively. Cheers! 3
Kegory
Here's a story about hops descended from those planted by the convicts at Port Arthur. https://www.abc.net.au/news/rural/2023-04-13/convict-grown-hops-yeast-from-shipwreck-into-beer/102154232
