Citrennarillo XPA

Recommended Posts

Thought I would start a new thread with a better name 😛

Finally got around to getting this down yesterday.  Final recipe was:

Fermentables:
3kg Coopers Liquid Light Malt

700g Wheat Dry Malt
200g Light Crystal

Hops (10L boil):
20g Centennial @ 30mins
20g Citra @ 15mins
20g Amarillo @ 15mins

25g Citra @ F/O (80C)
25g Amarillo @ F/O (80C)
12.5g Centennial @ F/O (80C)

Planning to dry hop 20g each of Amarillo and Citra.

Yeast:
US-05

OG: 1.053
Expected FG: 1.013
Kegged ABV: 5.3% (5.7% bottled).
Bitterness: 39IBU
Volume: 23L

I upped both the Citra and Amarillo F/O additions. That may or may not be because I had a few too many while brewing and watching Bathurst and accidentally grabbed Citra twice instead of Centennial and thought I better double down on Amarillo too. Should work well for an XPA anyway 😁

Will keep you updated with fermentation progress and tasting once its all done 🙂

Cheers, Mitch.

Hey Mitch,

What was the gravity of your boil?

Looks like a tasty beer mate. Looking forward to what you think in the glass.

Cheers mate!

Boil gravity was approx 1.040. Used 1200g of Liquid Malt into the 10L which should've got me just over 1.040 🙂

She's fermenting away nicely at 18C. Would post a picture but somehow managed to smash the camera on my phone yesterday 😮

Think I'll stick to my usual regime and dry hop on day 8/9 and remove hops to CC on day 11/12.

Smells delicious so far 🙂

Cheers.

Kegged this last night and first impressions are good 🙂

Smelt nice and hoppy and tasted great for flat beer. Unfortunately I am going to be away for part of this weekend so have just set it to serving pressure to carb up as I won't be here to turn the reg down if I was carbing at 40PSI. Will give it a crack in a week or so.

Cheers, Mitch.

A picture I took last night while enjoying one of these. Wheat malt is great for head retention and lacing. This glass wasn't even dried or cooled, just washed out from a previous beer and poured another straight into it.

Mind the out of focus camera... I smashed the glass on my phone camera somehow and now it doesn't like focusing up close 😞

As this ages a little more I am not seeing any huge change in hop aroma or flavour - maybe due to the hop stands instead of just large dry hopping.

Will definitely be experimenting with wheat malt more though...

Could sit a 50c piece on top of this head 😮

Looks great. Really into the XPAs at the moment

Me too, kind of like a nice medium between the easier drinking pale ales and harsher IPA's. I find I can session XPA's much more then the IPA's however love both styles.

I often have XPA/IPA on tap at once to have the best of both worlds.

I'm going to try and imitate this using AG now that I have made the move over, as this was probably one of my nicest brews to date.

I have one more SMaSH I am going to brew up this weekend, then this will be the next brew. I'll need to get to the LHBS to get some other grains as I only have the Pale Ale Malt at the moment.

Keen to give this a crack. If it turns out as good as the extract version I'll be stoked 🙂 (the hop stands are cube hops added at 80C).
