New Brew - English Bitter

PB2

Recommended Posts

To all the loyal forum members, I thought it would be nice for you to hear the news before it is published in the Coopers Club newsletter. A new brew has started to walk out of the warehouse as of today! Yes, it’s called English Bitter and it slots neatly into the International Series. The sad news is - we are no longer making the Original Series Bitter. One must shed a tear and get over it, I did, sort of! :(

The new English Bitter is based on the old bitter with some adjustments – a tweaked brewhouse recipe and the addition of late hop aroma (Styrian Golding) to produce a bitter more in line with the style found in the “Mother Land”.

We recommend for it to be made with 500g of Light Dry Malt. As for carbonation levels, you may like to try halving the priming rate and serving at a slightly higher temperature.

This is a the largest image I can manage at the moment

Paul,

Oh well, things move on. Bit of a shame though as I regularly make the Orig Bitter and always have a keg of it on tap. One mate and I regularly drink it. Suppose we will just have to adjust.

500gm of LDM is not going to make the % of alc very high. What would you recommend for something with a first fermentation of around 4.8 - 5% alc.

I shall look out for it when it gets into the Big W here but in the meantime I shall buy up on the Orig Bitter.

Cheers

Peter

Colour: 420EBC

Bitterness: 590IBU

Late hop addition : Styrian Golding

Use 1kg of Light Dry Malt to get up around 4.8-5% ABV.

Thirsty Matt, give it a try, you might like it!

Matt,

I suppose the same way that some people drink the other vile bitter i.e. (VB).

I don't have a session on it but often have couple of pints later in the day with a meal or a nice cheese and bickies.

Also if it is cooled to normal beer temp (around 4 degs C) then the flavour is not as full as it is at the higher (8-10 degs C).

I will certainly be giving the new brew a try with a kilo of LDM.

Cheers

Peter

Ross, the Original Series Bitter was supposed to be an English Bitter style. That's why it has a different looking glass on the label. I've always felt that it needed some tweeking to get closer to the style.

Now that I am back at work - Clipsal was huge - I will add an image to the original post.

And who said us Aussies were an insular, short sighted bunch...(hmmmm "bitter" pommie crap indeed).

Yes there is crap and its called Carling, Fosters & XXXX (brewed under license), Carlsberg, John Smiths, Tetleys, etc.....(or perhaps....... there are the real ale/bitter supporters as typified by CAMRA (Capiagn for Real Ale)...which is what us home brewers try to emulate).

The wise among the forum members have quoted the UK brewery Timothy Taylor (well done) as something to emulate....or perhaps why not try some of the micro brew ales/bitters which have sprung up in Oz in the last 5 - 10 years. Struth!!!!....25 years ago the only microbrewery was Redback, now every man and his dog in seems to be pumping out some microbrew..(ahhh but the world wide lager behemoths of Inbev SA, SAB Miller, Anheuser-Busch, Lion Nathan, etc....continue to grow. Coopers will cease to be an "independent" brewery before my last home brew is drunk!!!! Mark my words...enjoy it while we can).

A good bitter is a good bitter (regardless of where its from)...let us see what the Coopers boys/girls have bestowed upon us with this new incarnation of the amber homebrew kit

Hoooray!!!

Hey Paul,

I hope this new bitter will be available at Coles, we don't have a recognised brew shop here in Alice so we have to freight in any of the lines not carried by the supermarkets or Kmart, I do notice that they carry the international range generally though, so it should be covered.

It better be alright!

I'm told it will be on shelves in Big W, K mart and Coles (the larger stores). 8)

Wouldn't be holding my breath for Woolies to stock it. :(

It will be listed in the warehouse for IGA stores to order, if they so choose.

Oh, it's also available to Home Brew specialist stores.

English Bitter should be the same price as the other International Series cans.

Thanks for the "heads up" Thirsty! Will pass it on to our national sales manager.
