Can ya really taste the difference??

Long Gone

I reckon mine are all petty good whether I use hopped Coopers beer cans or just Coopers malt extracts. Theres been a fair bit of high level analysis going on and it sounds like high tech home brews are gettin a fair run. I don't reckon I could pull off any of this stuff yet but anyone can give mine a run and pull of a couple of decent brews. I reckon its like my stereo, cost me a couple of grand but I can't tell the difference between this one and my cousins one that cost her 10 grand.

I reckon there is a difference but whether it tastes better comes down to your taste. And then it is a question of whether the 'taste differential' is worth the extra time and equipment to do it.

I made some cracking kits and extract brews, with the odd shite one here and there. There is nothing wrong with them (except for the shite ones).

Keep brewing what you want to brew and don't worry about the tech homies with their backwards caps if you aren't interested.

And welcome to the forum Yosephina [biggrin]

Yes, I think there's a difference in taste as well. The thing with hopped tins is you're kinda stuck in whatever style and flavour profile they are. Although, I suppose you could take a Draught tin for instance and add a tin of dark extract + roasted barley and other dark grains and turn it into a porter or a stout. [lol] That's not to say you can't brew really nice beer with them - I did a few that I really enjoyed from kits. Unhopped extracts are a little different, you come up with your hop schedule/varieties, and other added grains for flavours and colours. I have to say none of my extract brews tasted like ones I made with kits, however they were also quite nice. I would say about the same level as kits just different flavours. When I went all grain though I noticed a big difference, and to me it tastes a lot better than kits or extracts. It tastes fresher to me. But, I can't speak for anyone else. You just have to try it yourself and like Hairy says, decide if the difference is worth the extra work. [biggrin]

Well guys

The keg just blew on my first extract brew. Although this one could have been "more bitter" in turned out to be a winner. My mate and his missus were just around and both tried it and were very impressed. In fact we were all disappointed when the keg blew. my mate asked if I had any more elsewhere.

Oh [w00t] here I go again rambling, the point is that by using unhopped cans I can make a beer that is truly Bespoke, whereas as Otto says the hopped cans dictate terms to a degree. However as Hairy says I have some great kit beers and the sister to brew to this one that has just expired is a fine example of the Coopers APA kit. Also as Hairy say the time and effort is a factor, though from my limited experience I would say it\u2019s a factor that actually makes your beer better (you know what I mean, I made it took me x hours to do and its great). But for me being extremely time poor I\u2019ll have to stick with kits and extracts.

Home brewing is different things, to different people.

Some have little time for the process & want simplicity to attain their wanted outcome(s). Others have more time & strive for more individualism through the available complexities of brewing to achieve theirs.

A basic acceptance & understanding of this diversity is all that is required.

Mostly good stuff here but mate you must love a good chin wag.

I'm guessing you are a pretty good fisherman Ed? [wink]

Maybe coat your bait with a bit of aniseed to lure me, or cast your line into another pond... [innocent] [lol]

Exactly. And it can be different things to the same people over a period of time. When I first got back into brewing, it was because I found the old FV I thought had been chucked, and thought, I enjoyed doing it before.. might give it a go again, and get some cheap beer out of it.

But now it has become a lot more than that. Sure, it's kickarse that it's cheap. But I have learned a fair bit about different styles, temperatures, hops, malts, yeasts, etc and now it's mostly about trying to make the best tasting beer I can. It's even more satisfying cracking open a bottle of AG and knowing you made it all from scratch yourself. [love]

Ditto (apart from the AG bit)

Cheap beer has never been my aim, I'm always looking for the best beer yet. Perhaps one day I'll do a partial then who knows, but I can safely say I have another 18 months of extract brewing..God Willing....hang on wasn't the world supposed to end today [pinched]

Yes. I started to save money and do it the simple way. Now I'm doing extracts and partials, buying 3 fermenters and a settling cube, owner 2 temp controlled fridges, rinsing yeast, investigating a stirplate, and spending ages on this forum. The payoff is worth it.
