Shame Aldi doesn't sell alcohol here in the Nanny state, mainly because it would turn everybody into a raging, homicidal maniac if they sold booze in a supermarket and driving 100km to Tweed Heads, where the closest NSW Aldi is is a little bit of an overkill  Especially where I can get premier league Erdinger and Weihenstephaner in every Uncle Dan's or 1st Choice. I am a little jealous of those lucky enough to be able to buy booze in a supermarket.  I grew up with this and I can't see the number of underage drinkers being higher there than it is here. But the nanny says no, so the nanny says no.

Yeh SA is also a Nanny state, but it’s ok for BWS to be right out the front of Woolworths, and I’m convinced the big 2 dictates the terms

There is a rumor that SA Aldi stores could be licensed soon but I am guessing the tree huggers will try & stop it.

It's not the tree huggers funnily enough. It is usually conservative and religious groups who campaign fiercely against it.

Remember, in Germany you can buy beer everywhere, Supermarket, Petrol station, Corner shop.... By the way,  Aldi sells on a regular base Coopers Pale Ale and Coopers Mild Ale. During their always changing Special Sales they have some nice Craft beers or imports like the two above Germans, starting next Wednesday they will have Coopers Dark Ale, yum.

I remember seeing in German supermarkets big 500ml CANS of full strength vodka, in the impulse section by the checkouts, you know, where here they normally have chocolate and gum

Walking into a supermarket in Germany is like paradise  and when you run out on a Sunday arvo, just go to the next servo and stock up. As long as it is before 10pm, all is good  Or getting a Curry Wurst mit Pommes und ein Bier mit Korn at an Imbiss. People have no idea how easy it could be

The thing is that if you grew up with it, it is nothing out of the ordinary and booze being readily available doesn't want to make you start drinking. I think not being allowed inside a bottleo until you are 18 makes what is in there soo much more desirable and more enticing than seeing it everywhere and as a normal thing. Even the lower drinking age of 16 for <22% alcohol drinks doesn't produce more drinkers than it does when the legal age is 18 or even 21. Yes, we used to sit in the pub aged 14 having a Hefeweizen and of course, we were underage but it was a different time then. Most pubs didn't really care as long as we weren't getting wasted and annoying other guests. At least that was the attitude in the small 7,000 soul town I grew up in.

People probably have no idea unless it was translated  coming from a cooking background I knew Pommes mean Potato, in this case chips & bier is beer, in this case, German Wheat beer.

I actually never really drank living in Germany, I think getting really sick on Bacardi and Coke at my first party cured me, ha ha. Being readily available posed no temptation for me.

I got a 4 x pack of these for $14.00 at Dan Murphy's but TBH another another 6-7 bucks would have got me the real deal, Coopers Pale Ale. 

It is nice but lacking a bit of punch & kinda tastes like a fruit tingle lifesaver.

I have been to both of the venues & had it from the tap but I am afraid a can just don't cut it.

The most shocking thing about it was really the size of the can, as well as the fact that it was a can. Once you open that thing, you gotta finish it

A Curry Wurst is a brat wurst spiced with curry powder and served with hot chips, which are colloquially referred to as "Pommes" after the French Pommes Frites. The latter is named after fried pommes de terre or in short potatoes.

Bier und ein Korn used to be a common order in a pub. Korn is a grain spirit, similar to Vodka. Usually made from wheat but also oat, rye and others. So the order is just a beer and a shot of Korn. Some people even pour the spirit into their beer. I had some fairly unpleasant experiences with this back in the day

Haha. I know how that feels. On my 18th, I consumed a bottle and a half of Asbach Uralt. I never touched that stuff since.

One of the best sessions I ever had was in Vietnam I found a little Cafe that had 500mil Chang cans for 8000 Dong which was 80 cents Australian

I got smashed once on straight Barcardi once even now I can't stand the smell of it we were going to a Rolling Stones concert and I lost seven hours of my life that I can't remember

I suppose most of you got this email re: Coopers Mild Ale now available in longnecks.

 

It is a damn good beer & the price is just a little bit kinder on the wallet. A good fridge filler IMO.

They are very sought after as you can only get them directly from the Monastery, although they did start a limited home delivery service during COVID. I’ve got hold of 4 cases of the number 8, which I’ll be picking up next weekend as they were delivered to a friend’s house in Belgium. Road trip time!

TBH I can’t taste much difference between that and a St Bernardus, which is readily available and quite cheap too. 

Ah I had one a few years ago. It was a very good beer but not for how much I paid for it to be honest. Out of all the Trappist beers I have had which is pretty much all of them my favourite is Rochefort 8.

I wouldn't mind if stores here started stocking that. I've tried it before but that was from a more specialist shop. As it is, we can only get pale, sparkling and stout in most places.
