ChristinaS1
My boils are 6-8L. I cool the kettle in the sink with tap water and several blue ice packs for about 30 minutes. If the water warms up too much, I will drain and add more tap water....Before I had a brew fridge and was using more primitive methods to control fermentation temperature I learned that those blue ice packs stay cold a lot longer than plain, frozen water. There are chemicals in the blue gel that cause that. In the summer I put two (or three if there is room) 4L jugs of water in the fridge the night before, so that they are 4C on brew day. I use them to top up the volume, instead of using warm tap water. Makes it much easier to hit pitching temp. Cheers, Christina. Otto Von Blotto
Does touching the ice really matter that much anyway? You're putting something sitting at -18 or whatever it is into near 100C wort... I don't think much would survive that.
