Ryano2
Hey guys. I'm looking at making some small batches of beer and kegging them. I have a few 19L corny kegs but I'm wondering if it's worth getting a 9.5L corny. Does it use heaps more gas only half filling a 19L keg? What are the benefits of using a mini keg over just half filling the 19L. Cheers!
The Captain!!
Hey Ryano, I can’t see the difference between using a 19l and a 9.5 as the gas difference would be negligible. Yes you’ll use more but in all honesty I don’t think it’s worth buying the smaller kegs to save on gas. Im going to be doing the same thing soon enough and just place them in my 19l kegs. Otto Von Blotto
I use a small one for blending surplus but that's about it. But other than filling extra head space in a full size keg I don't think the gas usage would change very much.
Ryano2
Nice cheers guys. Would I carbonate the same? I do the 3 minute shake at 30 psi and get great results.
Otto Von Blotto
That would be different. If you carbonated on serving pressure it would only take about half the time as a full 19L keg, so you wouldn't want to be doing an "instacarb" the same either. I'm not much of a fan of that method but if you use it I would leave the pressure the same but reduce the time to say 1 minute, then extend a few seconds at a time until it gets to the desired level. Better off being a bit undercarbed than over, as all it takes to rectify is a day or so on serving pressure.

BlackSands
There's also the mini keg options, a fairly new product from Mangrove Jack's: 3, 5 and 10 litre: https://mangrovejacks.com/search?q=mini+keg
Titan
You might find the mini's dont take the same pressure as the 19l versions. Thats my experience with my 10l version.

Otto Von Blotto
Surely they could handle 30psi though... I know my 19L ones are rated to 120psi and the smaller one is less but definitely higher than 30. I never quick carb that keg though, it only takes about 3-4 days on serving pressure anyway.
