James Lao
Hi all, Was wondering if anyone has ever kegged store bought beer? Was thinking maybe if buying a couple of cartons and keg hopping them for a bit of extra taste..? I have read a bit on the net but is a bit conflicting... Cheers James
Otto Von Blotto
Did it once to tie me over until I filled more kegs with home brew. Bought two cartons of Oettinger pils in 500mL cans and filled a 19L keg with them. It worked fine, but I haven't done it since. It does tend to flatten the beer a bit so it needs to be topped up with gas. The only thing I'd be wary about is oxygen ingress from pouring the beer into the keg. If you drink it quickly it's probably gonna be fine like mine was but you probably wouldn't want to let it sit for any length of time.
Mark D Pirate
I've blended beer in kegs a few times to correct HB batches that were off spec, not just poured bought beer into my kegs
porschemad911
I did it once when a mini-keg failed to dispense. Siphoned into a Tap-a-draft bottle and dispensed from there. Worked well! Cheers, John
Mark D Pirate
You still use your tap a draft ?
porschemad911
Yep, still working great. Have got 4 taps and 6 bottles (grabbed some cheap spares from eBay a while back). Last thing I used it for was my Dark Mild. Have got some English IPA conditioning in one at the moment. Cheers, John
The Captain!!
Sorry fellas, I’m struggling to understand why you would keg store bought beer.
Otto Von Blotto
Well when I did it kegging was still a novelty and i just wanted something to pour from the then new setup that was about 3 years ago. Not bothered since.

I had 5l of Zierholz Hopmeister that refused to leave its keg! Talk about an emergency...
