Nick
I just used Us-05 for the first time and after 6 days @20 deg i have a thick mat of trub on the top of the wort. when i move it slighly, the trub drops down through the wort. Is this normal and will the trub drop to the bottom over the next week? I plan on bottling next w'end. It is an APA with BE 2 Cheers,
Canadian Eh!L
Hey Nick, What you describe sounds normal for US-05. It will most likely form a thick "mud" layer on the top of the brew and it might not all settle to the bottom even after a couple of weeks. No worries, Mate. It's a great yeast and you should have no problems with it.
Hairy
Don't be surprised if one day you look and it s gone. The krausen on US-05 brews tend to hang around for ages and one day it just magically disappears.
Otto Von Blotto
Yep Chad is right. Every time I've used it it's done that too. But I love it. As I said in another thread, it produces a nice clean refreshing taste, which I find perfect for my pale ales [love] Just stocked up on some more of it the other day actually. Canadian Eh!L
I'm just waiting for my "Big Island" to be ready to move to secondary so I can harvest the yeast for my next experiment... I mean recipe.[joyful]
Lotm
Yeah US-05 looks slimy and sludgey and hangs around. Damned good yeast though.
Scottie
Hey Guys I had the same problem once with the dry US05, ended up scooping it off as it was hanging around for almost 3 weeks, even a weekend away in Melbourne wasn't enough to convince it to go (watched pot never boils kind of thing). The brew was the Fruit Sald Ale and as I have said before it wasn't my best brew ever even at that early satge, Brew #6. I have used 1056, Wyeast\u2019s liquid equivalent, 6 or 7 times without the same issue.
GrahamB8
ended up scooping it off as it was hanging around for almost 3 weeks' date='[/quote'] Why tempt fate?? During bottling/kegging it would be left in the fermenter or settle in the bottle/keg. I see no reason to go poking around because you dont like the look of your floaties [roll]
LordEoin
even if some makes it to the bottle, it's no harm. it'll settle out anyway [happy]
Lotm
It dropped as I racked it to a secondary. After a while in the secondary, very little made it to the bottle.
