miket6
I will be brewing this kit that has been delivered by my freinds at coopers. Does anyone recommend making a yeast starter from the packets supplied or should i just throw them in as instructed
Matty A
I generally make a yeast starter the day before and let it grow a bit. This helps me determine the health of the yeast (to a point) before I pitch it. If i determine that the yeast is sh!t then I won't use it and purchase some yeast. If it looks good I will use it. I have done it both ways and been successful each way.
Hairy
I don't make a starter for dry yeast but I rehydrate it in water.

Coxy
Just throw them in as instructed [joyful] This. Whenever I've used dry yeast I've just thrown it in.
Otto Von Blotto
Same here. I'm too lazy to bother making starters and all that[lol] It works fine for me.
SteveD14
Just cracked some Czech Pils last night after 4 weeks in bottle. Very nice indeed. Used kit plus 1 can light malt extract and 300g dextrose to up the alchohol a bit. Just gave the kit yeast a start in some tepid (pre boiled) water and a spoon of sugar for about 1/2 an hour. Fermentation took about 10 days (around 14-16 C) plus gave it another 4 days to clean up. Very pleased with the result, great mouth feel, aroma and taste very true to style, head is developing well but likely will be better in a few more weeks. Bit darker than I was expecting and I probably will do without the 300g dextrose next time.
