weggl
Big W Brookvale is once more out of stock, bugger all on the shelves. It has been like this for almost two weeks now. Went to day, the second time in 7 days, no Pale Ale but fortunately Woollies had some. Wegglk Will this mob ever get their act together?
GaryF1
Gee Weggl, haven't you got a home brew shop nearby. I make it a point to try and purchase my brews from a specialist shop. I rarely pay extra, at most a dollar or so. Not being critcal at all, but I'm surprised to see folk buy newspapers and mags from a supermarket, when just over the way is a newsagent, who is selling the same gear for exactly the same price. lachlanb
the closest home brew store is 20ks away (sydney traffic). Not really local at all. Waz, without disclosing who i work for, i have spoken to the buyer of this category for big w and was told that the growth of the home brew category over the last 12 months was something like 400% and they are "working on it" Not sure how true this is
Hairy
That is probably true. I think Warren started brewing around then and has contributed to most of that growth. Especially at Warringah Mall. Big W at Penrith has stacks of products. Perhaps a drive out west is on the cards to stock up. With regards to LHBS, most of them in Sydney are much more expensive than Big W. Plus I can go to Big W on Thursday nights and Sundays when the LHBS is closed. The LHBS tends to be open only during the hours I work except for Saturday mornings. Matty A
I rarely now shop at BigW for my Kits. I would rather go to the LHBS store even tho he is atleast 40ks away from my home, but he is always pleasant to talk to, he shares great advice (I have heard of some store owners not doing this) and he has a keg setup in the store to let customers have a taste test. The ones around here are great stores.
Hairy
Don't get me wrong, my LHBS is very good. The owner is knowledgeable and willing to share that knowledge and holds regular brewing demonstrations. Hops and yeast are kept in the fridge which is a good sign. They just can't compete on price for OS & International series kits, LDM and PET bottles etc. I buy items from there that aren't available at Big W so they still get plenty of business from me. weggl
Yea Lachlan, they are working on it, they told me the same thing last year, bloody slow workers. Went there again this morning, still 1/2 empty shelves. Mat, 40 Ks in Blaney would take you about 20 min, the closest to me is Nt Sydney, a pain in the bum in Sydney traffic. I only go there to get Coopers international and Premium stuff. Woolies restock every night, they are food suppliers and know how to keep stock levels up Big W dont understand supply and demand, a bunch of dickheads.[pinched] Weggl
Matty A
Almost Warren, its roughly 30 minutes after you drive halfway through town[lol] . Maybe even if you bulk buy from them or even Woolies. If you decide to go elsewhere to buy the product they might get the hint, or decide to not stock the shelves. I know if I was the manager and a customer whinged because something I sold wasn't available I would be trying anything to fix the issue. I spose a big chain like BigW doesn't really need to keep a minority of people happy.
Dj labby
If I want Coopers kits, then Big W is the best. Either Miranda or Menai has the kits and for about 12bucks, can't beat them. I still go to my home brew shops, but the want to charge 18bucks or so for PA kits, so who do you think i'm going to go with?? I only wish i could get Coopers Malt cans from there!! My LHBS has bulk malt for $6/kg, so i've been buying in bulk and i just tend to hop my own brews nowadays anyways. Can't get wheat malt in bulk!!! Unfortunately Coopers have put their online prices up, so the cost of freight doesn't really outweigh the savings from buying from the source. I give my business to Big W, Coopers or the almighty Craftbrewer. As for newspapers - Do perople still but them? I just read mine online [biggrin]
DavidP17
I give my business to Big W, Coopers or the almighty Craftbrewer. I live 10 min from Craftbrewer they have a walk-in cold room to hold all their hops and yeast [love] Big W is still a dollar or two cheaper on the PET's and Kits etc. I'd still rather get my gear from Craftbrewer or the other 2 LHBS in my area just for the advice and all the gear i can fantasise about having one day haha

Pistnbroke
I find my local Big W at Mount Hutton to be pretty well on the money with stocking up on home brew supplies. Every time I have gone in there, they have always had what I was after on the shelf, so I generally get my fermentables from there while I do the shopping as they are cheaper than the HBS for pretty much the same thing, and just get the rest (Cans/hops) from the HBS since Big W does not keep hops or the TC range. Perhaps management of that particular store is to blame for not holding enough stock to meet demand? I guess I am lucky as well, it only takes me 10 mins drive to get to the HBS as well. My advice would be pre-order it through big W

Damien E1
I've noticed around here that the Big W in Doncaster Shoppingtown has good range and supply*, but I've not once seen a single home brewing kit in Big W Box Hill. *Funnily enough right on the bottom hidden at the back of the shelf they still have one of the old micro brew kits lying around! Muddy Waters
Muddy' date=' does not your sister drink? What's wrong with the girl? [biggrin'] She drinks Warren - no fear (They are a home brew household). In fact they are down at the moment drinking all my home brew but as I have just embarked on a 4 week dry spell I have to just watch and sip my green tea [innocent]
