kieran
Mmmmm.. Let me think. There is a place in the CBD on Spencer street. Not sure of the name of the hotel, but its on the western side of the street - a decent walk north of the train station (southern cross/spencer st. station that is). Maybe 2-3 blocks north. Not a bad pub.. I've only been there once though. There's probably also the place that hosted the Coopers club night - across the road from the hospital in north melbourne/parkville. Sorry about the lack of specifics, I've been living here for 2 years and there's so many pubs I've been to, that many blur into the background. Frank
I passed this info directly onto Bek as she arrived in Melbourne and promptly forgot to post it here for everyone's benefit... This is a copy of Jason's email reply to my query: Here are a couple of place with Coopers Lager on tap; • George Hotel (Wine Room) – Fitzroy Street St.Kilda • Automatic – Crown Casino Some other great place for a cold Coopers - • Great Britain- Church St Richmond • Holliava - Swan St. Richmond • Marquis Of Lorne- Kerr St. Fitzroy. Please pass on my number to anyone that will be in Melbourne and I can direct them in the right direction. Oliver
Kieran, I think the hotel on Spencer Street to which you refer is called ... the Spencer Hotel! If you're walking out of the city it's on the left about five minutes or a little more from Spencer Street Station (or, as The Great Bracksy has now renamed it for some stupid reason, Southern Cross Station). The address is 475 Spencer Street, West Melbourne. It certainly does have Coopers on tap. Pale and Sparkling, from memory. A damn fine pub, renowned for its food. It's not really a pub you'd go to for a big night out, but pretty good. Cheers, Oliver
kieran
Yeah, that's it Oliver! :) I went there with my brother-in-law when he was over from Adelaide for a work conference. As you say, it isn't cut from the same cloth as the Adelaide UniBar (or Espy/Northcote Social Club, for a Melbournian reference), but perhaps more like a bar in the Casino.. I haven't tried the food their though, but have heard elsewhere that it is quite good. If I'm ever in the Melbourne CBD though, you'll invariably find me frequenting the Portland Hotel/James Squire Brewhouse - their Chicken Parmies are great.. and I've become quite a slut for their Golden Ale, and their Amber Ale is quite good as well, as is their Porter. I know they're owned by 'the arseholes' but until the Cooper's stop resting on their Ale Laurels, I'll continue to investigate other fine aussie ales! Don't get me wrong, I still love Pale Ale and Sparkling Ale, but its high time Pale and Sparkling had a lovechild that was not a light or mild or strong variant, but with something a little different to give it some hoppy floral bouquet. :) kieran
Dr Smurto
One of my fave pubs in melbourne (I lived there for a few years) was The Pony - 68 Little Collins St in the CBD next to one of those ever present shite irish pubs. Pale and Sparkling on tap and a supporter of local music so bands on most nights and for about the cost of a pint! http://www.pony.net.au/
