King Ruddager
I haven't sanitised my kit before and just realised there's going to be some difficulty sanitising the krausen collar at the same time as the rest of the kit, so how is this normally done? I've got some of the Coopers sanitiser, but I'm figuring you can't just assemble the whole thing and fill it because it'll either leak or there'll be an area between the collar and the fermenter which doesn't get sanitised properly. So, is there a trick or way around this or am I just going to have to do the collar separately in my laundry sink?
AdamH1525226084
Hi Ruddager Just attach the krasusen collar as you would when brewing and fill with sanitiser to almost the top of the FV. I was thinking about this on the weekend, and I figure for a brew with a big Krausen, it will stick to the sides of the collar anyway, and not come back into the brew.... Rinse everything with hot water before and after you've sanitised. You can also dip it into the FV sideways if you want, I think it fits [unsure]
King Ruddager
But wouldn't that mean that part of the fermenter doesn't get sanitised, and so when the collar is removed the beer may be contaminated?
AdamH1525226084
Not if you add the collar after filling [biggrin] I don't thin it's not a water tight seal between the two anyway. Also, if you have liquid beer up that high you've filled the FV too much I reckon
King Ruddager
Hmm, fair point. Might try a "wet run" tonight then to see what happens. Still, is there any danger in not sanitising the collar above the level that the beer reaches?
AdamH1525226084
I don't think so - I haven't had any issues yet in the 8 brews I've done anyway. As long as you clean it well before hand you should be able to minimise any possible issues anyway.
Wayne (Captain Yobbo)
Sanitizing the DIY kit is easy just go out and get a spray bottle I use a spray bottle filled with star san spray every part of the kit including the lid never had an issue
LordEoin
I've never had a problem using just boiling water and a soft sponge
Guest
Its extremely important to make sure everything is sanitised. While is possible that you cam use boiling water amd "get away" with it its also possible to still get infection, boiling water is not free from microbes unless its been boiled 3 times over 3 days. Spores can survive a boil and will bud again. The danger you run is growing a resistant microbial infection that can easily tolerate what you are throwing at it. This is why many of us invest in such products as starsan or oidophor. Its even possible for bugs to become tolerant to these specialised products amd its recommended that you change the routine every few months. The routine should always be, wash, rinse, sanitise. Never finish on a rinse, tap water is full of bugs. While we use tap water for brewing, what we rely on is that the numbers of microbes is quite small amd the yeast will out compete anything else in there to become the dominant life form. Every homebrew has some level of infection (however small) amd due diligence should ne placed on making it as hostile as possible for foreign microbes and yeast friendly. LordEoin
I think its tinfoil hat time! The germ that beats a boiling deserves victory over me and the millenia of men before me. Although, it'll probably just knock me back a bit for a day then make me stronger. Luckily I keep myself primed against germy infestations by building up an immunity through a strict regime of licking homeless people's nostrils and eating raw bacon wrapped in dirt. It's probably not as bad for me as years of trace measures of no-rinse sanitizer building up in my liver... Whatever approach you take, just do your best, have fun and have another beer! LordEoin
come on over! You're just in time for summer, the nicest time to live under a bridge. You can claim that you're 'occupying' the place [biggrin]
PeterW30
I confess to a similar sanitizing regime as LordEoin except for "intense radiation treatment" (sunlight) which may not be available in Ireland. Though everthing gets the chemical treatment at least yearly. I expect a fail will happen one day, but after 210 19 litre kegs I will live with that. Under my bridge beer tastes great with crusty kangaroo road kill. On tap now: Coopers Wheat with Galaxy hops boil and flowers dry.

Im sure under that in an Irish summer is better than my Whetherboard home this time of year and worst part i lost my favourite jacket while coming home from a mates drunk last week [crying]
