Muddy Waters
As the title states, I am after ideas for brewing the original series lager (The one that comes with the Coopers kit). I have only made it once to recipe when I bought my first kit and I didn't really enjoy it...I thought it was too middle of the road...just like a VB or New. I now have a can of it that I got for free and am looking for inspiration. With some hops would it come good? I know PB2 recently mentioned that prior to Pale Ale it was his go to base can - Any suggestions Paul? I'll do a bit bit of homework on the kit but would also appreciate a headstart if anybody has any tips or recommendations how to turn it into a great beer. My first thought was to go in Amercian Pale Ale direction hops wise but I'm open to suggestions.
Kearnage
Muddy, I have the same problem (2 cans of lager sitting around). My ideas were: 1. Make the Irish Ale recipe with the lager tin, not draught. 2. Make the Unreal Ale using a can of lager rather than the dry malt and with maybe 500g dextrose 3. Make the Green Neck Lager recipe with the original lager, and add the left over Hallertau hops I have (dry/late hop) I then ran out of ideas, and was diverted by the new featured recipe for Steam Beer. I spent a couple of months working in the USA and Anchor Steam was the house beer, great stuff. I'm very surprised to see it is brewed with a lager yeast at slightly higher temperatures. The liquid yeasts and specialty hops have this one looking like the most expensive beer I've brewed, so I hope its good!!

I think I will make it to 19l and add some Cascades I have in the freezer.
Trusty1
how about adding a can of TC liquid malt (choose your flavour, or a can of dark ale???) and call it a Bock (light/dark, whatever you choose) use a lager yeast, maybe some dex to bump ABV, late hersbrucker hops (not really in keeping with bock, but I like and have great aroma[kissing] )? or, add to a can of real ale, 1kg of dex with some nelson sauvin hops (or something you have on hand) brewed with recultured pale ale yeast and call it "fill in your name"'s extra strong awesome ale. AlexR
I made this once with just the kit and BE2, it wasn't bad at all, and much nicer than made to recipe with the kilo of brewing sugar that came with the microbrew kit - I'll probably make it again this summer (got a spare from my second fermenter), maybe chuck in a bit of B-saaz that's in the freezer, maybe not. Muddy Waters
I just went to my local supermarket which is closing down on Sunday - I ended up buying 3 more cans of the lager and 5 cans of Coopers Ginger Beer - They were going for $2 each [biggrin] So, along with regular recipes using the original lager I'd also be open to any toucan recipes has for the lager. I wonder how it would go with a true lager yeast and some appropriate hops ....hmmm.
Muddy Waters
Not too many ideas coming? Trusty you've got me thinking along the lines of a light bock similar to the one on this site. Maybe 2 x lager 1kg LDM and some hops (maybe steep some grains to give it some colour). Surely someone has some tried and tested ways to utilise this kit? I've got four cans so I'm open to styles. Kearnage
Muddy, I tried but I haven't worked out what to do with mine yet [crying] Someone on another forum swears by a toucan of the OS lager (I think just cans nil else) so some LDM and appropriate late hops should be nice. There are some ideas here: Customize Coopers This one sounds interesting, but some grain effort involved and I would probably use Hallertau hops as I can actually get them: ROCKY MOUNTAIN AMERICAN DARK This is a Bock-Like lager made with added chocolate malt. The American Mount Hood hops add fine flavour and aroma. 1 can Coopers Lager 50g Cracked Crystal Malt 100g Cracked Chocolate Malt 500g Light Dry Malt Extract 20g Mount Hood Hop Pellets I might try this one myself. Muddy Waters
Thanks guys keep 'em coming [biggrin] The ROCKY MOUNTAIN AMERICAN DARK sounds good Dan. I'm hard to please so I'm still in need of inspiration from an O.S. Lager aficionado. The more ideas the more inspired (or undecided [biggrin] ) I can be. Squishy
Muddy i've been given a can of this by a workmate who bought a Micro Brewery to brew Ginger beer in (he doesn't drink). I was going to use it to try out a few new (To me) Tecniques like hopping . That way if its crap its cost me nothin![lol]
JonathanM3
Anyone think a toucan with the Lager and maybe a stout would work well, sort of a pre-mixed black and tan [joyful] ?
JonathanM3
Everyone in Australia seems to be thinking lagers right now, it's the middle of a summer full of 90+ degree (F) days here in Upstate, NY my basement is running about 28 degrees C
RoyG
Hi muddy. When i buy a new fermenter i use the lager and brown sugar. Not to bad. beats the original suggestions. Roy
Muddy Waters
PB2 - Are you around? [cool] If you have any tips for tarting up the Original Series Lager I would be most honoured and thankful. I have 4 tins and for starters am thinking of going in Euro lager direction (hersbucker???) maybe with the yeast I have left over from a Coopers Euro lager and a American pale ale direction (cascade/amarillo/ and or centennial) with US-05. Or if you have any suggestions in any other directions that would be great as well. I really don't know what to expect from this kit??? Thanks [biggrin]

Muddy Waters
[lol] Please Paul...pretty please! PB2
This should make a nice beer - the Original Series Lager beer kit with 1kg of light dry malt, some specialty grains if you like, flavour and aroma with your favourite North American hops and ferment with the US-05 yeast. As mentioned before, being just hops and malted barley, it's a good kit to use as an adjunct to other beer kits. This will help to maintain a balance in bitterness and residual sweetness. Any hop additions need only add flavour and aroma.
Muddy Waters
Thanks Paul - I have been searching around everywhere on the interweb and there is very little info on how people use this kit. I'll be doing a pale ale in the vein you mentioned but I think I'll try a true lager of some sort as well. I'm on a tight brewing budget so I am trying to keep my experimentation to a minimum at the moment.
MurrayK
Hi guys, I am fairly new to this (only 2 batches down), but couldn't resist the discounted original series lager at my local supermarket and thought I would give it a go. I am a bit unsure as to what brew enhancer to use (if any). I'm not at the point where I have specialised hops & yeast, but I do have some extra malt hanging around that I can use (about 500g). Can anyone offer any suggestions as to what they would use?
PB2
Murray, try using 500g of BE1 (or 500g of Brewing Sugar) and 500g of Light Dry Malt, made to 23litres and ferment at 21C. [biggrin]
Slurtis Staggersalot
I'm thinking a lager can plus a real ale can, some hops (I have no experience yet as far as the hops go) I'm guessing cascades although I have others that may be nice... some dex or LDM to boost the ABV I have no idea how it would turn out but I sure would like to know...[bandit]
Kearnage
Well, I ended up making something like the Rocky Mountain American Dark I mentioned near the start of this thread, recipe ended up Coopers OS lager, 500g LDM, 250 g dextrose, 100 g each crystal and chocolate grain (steeped), 12 g Hallertau hops boiled 15 min and 12 g at flame out, used saflager w 34/70 yeast, fermented at 12-14 deg. Bottled it today, around 5% abv, clear dark amber, crisp taste with good bitterness and the hops blend nicely (I found them a bit overpowering when I used Hallertau as late hops in a Euro lager). Obviously the proof will be how it tastes after bottle conditioning, but at this point it seems like a winner and something I may try again. So yep the OS lager with the kit is cool after all [happy]

Hey Muddy, I know it was a couple of years ago, but I was wondering what you decided for your lager recipe and how it turned out? I've found myself in a similar boat!
