Brookes Beer Das Unterseeboot Imperial IPL

Released November 6 2014

The latest single batch, draught-only release from Bendigo's Brookes Beer was inspired by a meeting of brewer Doug's lips and Pliny the Elder's juices. It's not the first (and won't be the last) time such an occasion has inspired flights of fancy in a brewer, but it may be the first time the brewer has attempted to create a tribute to one of the world's most revered hoppy drops in the form of a lager rather than an ale. But that's what he's gone and done, creating Das Unterseeboot (German for U-Boat): an Imperial India Pale Lager.

Breaking that down suggests it's going to be rather hoppy ("India") with added booze and even more hoppiness (the "imperial"). But that doesn't even get close to just how hoppy Doug has attempted to make the beer. The human palate is said to be able to differentiate bitterness levels in beer up to around 100 or so IBU (international bitterness units); on paper, the U-Boat is a whopping 260 IBU. According to the brewer himself: "Many would say that’s a waste of hops or just plain BS."

So which is it? Apparently, the base of the beer is built with pure hop resin from Warrior hops added to the kettle for an extended boil plus a late addition of kettle hops and two more additions of dry hops to create "a pale, intensely hopped beer". Says Doug: "As far as we know we cornered the last few scraps of Simcoe hops in the country to add to this beer. A little of the hop resin stuck to the stainless on the kettle, it’s still there. We tried hitting it with boiling caustic, acid, our high pressure washers, pot scrubbers – nothing worked. It’s set like kryptonite."

He goes on to talk about a "very firm, masculine bitterness" and an "overwhelming bitterness" as well as a bunch of fruits – "intense grapefruit, citrus rind and pine", "the lingering intensity of the hop experience" and "a generous 'weedy' (as in pot) hop-burp". Thus there's little surprise he concludes: "Made especially for lovers of hops."
