PeterM40
How many carbonation tabs should I use for 22oz bottles. 22oz = 650.617ml. 1 tab = 345 - 375ml 2 tabs = 740 - 750ml. If I use 2 tabs will it compromise the stout?
Guest
2 will be too many imo and 1 may be just enough. However, I would bulk prime and that way you know that each bottle will get exactly the amount you are after.
ChrisMack
Hmmm....I was always under the impression that Stouts should be - can I say "flatter" anyway (guess it's down to personal preference - prefer to have some fizz in my beers!).... pretty sure a fair few Stout recipes say to halve the carbination ratio....so 1 drop should be enough. NewtownClown
+1 for Bill's opinion. With Stout, Porter and most English Ales, I have found 1 drop to be close to perfect in a UK Pint bottle. Some styles can forgive slight over/under carbonation, however 1 drop in 22 oz could be too low (FG relative, IMHO). If, as Bill opined, you can bulk prime, you will be spot on. PeterM40
OK, it sounds like bulk prime is the answer. I figured about 52 tabs for 5 gals. of stout. How long after the prime can I bottle it? Thank you all for your input!
Guest
if you bulk prime... or tablets... you need to bottle right away as (secondary) fermentation of that sugar will begin when it's at ferment temps. Yob
Muddy Waters
Peter - Are you saying you will be bulk priming with carb drops? That wont work unless you cook them down into a syrup/liquid. You'd be better of just using dextrose or white sugar.
Guest
I wouldn't be bulk priming with carb drops. It defeats the sole purpose of the drops and it will likely not be as accurate either. As Muddy suggested, just use white sugar or dextrose.
PeterM40
Oooh! OK. I'm still learning this Home Brew Stuff. I found a home brew store about 30 minutes away. If I do go with the bulk, I'll get the sugar from there. I think it's time to get a book on this stuff. Thanks again.
Hairy
Get yourself a copy of John Palmer's "How to Brew". Its a good investment.
