Is my FG too low?

Keano

Recommended Posts

Hi Guys,

I put down a pale ale a couple of weeks back. I was looking for a mid strength beer this time round so only added 500gLDM and 250g Dextrose topped up to 23l. OG was 1032. Checked the FG today and it is 0097 (@18 c). Should I still bottle or is this too low?

Cheers

Keano

I think your hydrometer is screwy Keano.

With those ingedrient you should have and OG of around 1035 (which you did) and a 1008 FG.

How does the sample taste?

If you are sure fermentation is complete I'd still plan on bottling it but I reckon your reading is out (the fact that your og is ok makes it a little more confusing).

Thanks Muddy, I was using the new Coppers DIY hydrometer but just checked with my old one and got a 1010 reading so I think you're right. Its a shame because I liked the design of the new hydrometers. Sample tastes fine and smells ok, very pale in colour but thats to be expected with that recipe.

Keano, don't discard your plastic hydrometer. Try testing it in water at 20 degrees. It should be 1.000 (or thereabouts).

Your reading may have been an anomaly caused by something else.

If your hydrometer is stuffed, try calling Coopers for a replacement.
