JonnyPerthBrew
Hi Guys, looking at trying to build up a yeast harvest for UK ales. I have heard that the 5L mini-keg is conditioned with yeast and wondering if this is true prior to buying it. Anyone have any feedback on this would be great. Adnams (mini-kegs contain the primary dual-strain, but bottles do not) - as taken from https://www.thehomebrewforum.co.uk/threads/bottle-conditioned-beer-list.58007/
Beerlust
Hi JonnyPerthBrew, & welcome to the forum. You can naturally condition any volume of beer. I suspect Adnams likely avoid over-carbonation issues with their bottle stock by force carbonating them as most breweries do by using CO² gas on a bottling line. However, they appear to be fine with using the yeast to naturally condition these 5 litre kegs. For you to do this at home you need to use the White Labs WLP025 Southwold Ale yeast strain (reportedly the Adnams strain) to primary ferment your beer, then just add your secondary priming sugar at the recommended rate to your 5 litre keg(s) to naturally carbonate the beer using the yeast that is already present in the beer from the primary fermentation. I hope that helps, Lusty.
