shaun s
Hi there I want to brew an authentic India Pale Ale, the problem is that I havent been able to find any Light Dry Malt. What I do have is a 1,5 kg tin of coopers Light malt extract. Can I substitute that and if so, what would the ratio of malt to sugar be for the authentic IPA? PB2
G'day Shaun, welocme to the Brewers Guild! A 1.5kg can of liquid Light Malt Extract equates to about 1.1kg of Light Dry Malt. [biggrin]
Squishy
Will this work either way?? IE using LDM for a sparkling Ale???
PB2
Sure - only, Light Dry Malt is a little more difficult to handle in larger qtys. [pinched] On the flip side, long term storage is the big positive with dry product, assuming it's not allowed to become moist - it's very stable in colour, aroma and flavour. MathewE
g'day shaun, I'm just interested how the IPA went? I was thinking of trying it, did you follow the coopers recipe? I'm still a newbie at all this, only brewed three lots, and about to brew an english bitter, would you give the IPA a go this early? is there anything to look out for when brewing something like this? any help would be great - cheers, mat. Matty A
hey Mat, My IPA which is almost 6 months old is definately a winner. Although in saying that it is very bitter (but I like bitter) and I have family that say its too bitter for there taste. The only thing I can say is you will need to try it to determine if you will like it. The good thing is since you brewed it you probably will. I followed this recipe http://www.coopers.com.au/the-brewers-guild/how-to-brew/strong/authentic-ipa. You could also try http://www.coopers.com.au/the-brewers-guild/how-to-brew/mid-strength/ipa which isn't as strong as the authentic one.
