Bruce
Hi I just put in a batch of Coopers Lager and put in about 1.2 kilo of dextrose sugar and a brew enhancer. I took the OG and it was about 1035. I tried to take a SG just now and it has been 2 days in fermenting and the airlock hasd been bubblinglike crasy. When I put the hydrometer in it started rising above 1035 to 1050, 1060 and so on. And ideas.
PB2
You are probably getting a higher reading because bubbles are adhering to the hydrometer - making it float higher in the sample. You can get around this by degassing your sample - pour back and forth between two cups about 20 times or so, let sit until the foam subsides then pour the sample back into the measuring flask and float the hydrometer. Oliver
I find that the foam subsides within a few minutes if you just leave it to sit. When you put the hydrometer in, give it a spin to remove the bubbles, which would cause the hydrometer to float high and give a false high reading.
