RussellB5
G'day i have just purchased half a dozen kilos of light dried malt extract from a not so local HBS with the intent of using the LDME only with the cans ie 1.7kg can + 1kg LDME. is this correct or do I need to add some form of sugar as well, like a dextrose or maltodextrose, BE? cheers Russ
Otto Von Blotto
You can just use the dry malt extract. If you want to boost the ABV you could add a little dex, maybe 200-300g. I made a few brews like that with just the kit and kilo of LDM and they turned out quite well.

LordEoin
Kit + DME + hops is the way to go. You won't be disappointed. [happy] You can even prime with DME if you want, never done it so i'm not sure if it's a 1:1 replacement
Otto Von Blotto
I don't think it's 1:1 replacement, because some of it won't ferment, just as in primary. I don't know what the ratio is though.

RussellB5
Thanks Lord is Cane suage and dextrose 1:1 have you tried priming with honey before? id be interested as to what flavour it imparts on the beer as opposed to adding the honey to the initial ferment

Muleyinoz
The can and a kilo in 23ltrs will give you 4.2% Add 300G Dex will make it about 4.8% I like mostly malt but will sometimes use a bit of dex for a dryer finish. Just play with it to get what you like.[happy]

PB2
Hey Russell, at Coopers Brewery, we use liquid sugar (sucrose) to prime our naturally conditioned ales because it's the most convenient ingredient for handling purposes with predictable carbonation levels.[cool] From trials we have performed in the laboratory - 1kg of sucrose (dry) is equal to about 1.1kg to 1.2kg of dextrose. Lotm
+1 to everything above. Dex in small doses. Still struggling to finish my batch of "cider-beer".... BE1 is not the fermentable for me. DME all the way.
