Guest
Dont discard. Just make sure you give it a good spin.
Damien E1
when taking any SG reading should i always discard the first sample drawn from the FV and should i always degass? If you've just made it it's a good idea, on day 10 or whenever I wouldn't. Yes, you should always degas otherwise you'll get wrong readings from the bubbles sticking to your hydrometer. Muddy Waters
For your starting gravity there isn't likely to be much if any sediment in the tap so you needn't discard the first sample and as fermentation hasn't started you will not need to "degas" a quick spin is always a good idea though....just to be sure. LeonardC2
When taking my OG reading,I sanitize the hydrometer & tube 1st. So after I get my reading,I dump it back in. Succesive readings get the taste test.

Guest
When taking my OG reading' date='I sanitize the hydrometer & tube 1st. So after I get my reading,I dump it back in. Succesive readings get the taste test.[/quote'] I wouldn't suggest doing this. Even though it may be fine 99% of the time, why chance losing 23L for the sake of returning 150ml? I don't waste mine either but I drink them. Saves the extra work and taking the chance and ends up in the same place eventually
