To strain or not to strain?

I always use a fine mesh strainer going into the Fv. I agree that it def gives way less trub & cold break in the bottom. I typically get about 3/8 inch of trub by racking time. The FM strainer also helps aerate the wort & top off water going in.

I think getting all the hop gunk, cold break, etc strained out helps it clear up better myself.

By the way, midwest had New Zeland hops for 25% off from the new harvest. So I got 13ozs,3oz of each of the 5 varieties they had. Some different tasting ales will be forthcoming.

I have to say this happened to me on my last brew by accident.

I had moved house and packed the strainer. This previous fact was discovered about 1 minute from flame out on hops (and the steeped grain).

So I managed to use the lid to keep most of the grains from relocating to the FV, but the hops went in.

Overall, haven't tried it yet but very aromatic (also dry hoped by just tossing it in).

The big issue was that it all mucked about with the tap. I think a couple grain got through and bottling was a complete trial.

Lesson learnt.
