Counter flow chiller

Recommended Posts

Does anyone have any experience in running a counter flow wort chiller with pool water?

I have a KL counter flow wort chiller that seems to work pretty well with tap water, but of course even the best counter flow wort chiller uses a considerable amount of water and town water these days is expensive, as it should be here in the driest continent. I have a pool and I am thinking that I should be able to use all that water to good effect to help cool my wort so to that end I bought a relatively cheap submersible pump that appears to have all the capacity that I need to recirculate my pool water through my counter flow chiller. I am thinking to connect the pump from the pool to the brewery with just plain old garden hose and use the same to return the water to the pool, so in effect the pool just acts as a big heatsink for cooling the wort. My pool is probably 10m from the brewery and the brewery is probably about 2.5m above the pool.

Anyone see any problems with my proposed method? Or have any tips?

This is the counter flow wort chiller that I have. If this works I would possibly upgrade the counter flow chiller to the Coolossus SS version. https://www.kegland.com.au/products/braided-wort-heat-exchanger-counterflow-chiller

This is the pump that I have. https://www.ozito.com.au/p/4170563-psdw-350/

I do not see any issues.  If your pool is solar heated, it might be a challenge.  You can probably only get your wort down to 4-5°C above your cooling water temperature.
