From my perspective it functions just as an internet drinking game, getting badges for drinking different types of beers in different places. I've been using Beer Advocate and that has been really useful for me. It has proper, considered beer reviews. It has really helped me start to build some beer assessing skills. It doesn't offer much about the just brewed last week for the first time specialty beer but there are heaps of reviews of the more classic beers.
