Fermentation process in the dark?

Hello all,

I'm about to start my second brew and want to move the fermentation tank to my kitchen where its warmer and holds a steady temperature. Does the first fermentation need to be done in the dark or with very little light? The new area has no direct sunlight obviously but my kitchen has windows and light does come in.

Cover it with a dark colored towel,or an old jacket to keep the light out of it. Otherwise,it could get skunked. I use an old,fleece lined CPO to cover mine. Helps keep ambient air temp fluctuations off it as well. It made it way easier to keep mine at 20C during it's stay in primary.

I was brewing in my kitchen prior to getting the fridge and had no problems. However, the less light the better but as I said, I had no problems.

In the past I have done pleanty of brewing in the kitchen with no problems. I did have some concerns about the fluorescent lights so I got in the habit of draping a towel around the fermentor - not sure if it made a difference though.

Try to avoid direct sunlight or the close proximity of fluorescent lights (within a metre).

I have two fermenters and I wrap old flannelette shits around them and store them inside a cupboard in my shed keeps out the light and helps keep the temp. fairly constant, not to mention I love opening the cupboard and getting the smell wafting out, always puts a smile on my dial
