wilfw
Someone is spreading a rumour on a British Forum that Coopers are no longer producing the Original series Stout, apparently a Home Brew Shop gave out this info. Is there any truth in it?
Slurtis Staggersalot
If there is I'm going to buy every single one on the shelf the next time I'm at the grocery store...
wilfw
That's pretty much the feeling with a lot of folks on the other forum. I just wondered if minds could be set at rest.
Andris
Sounds like a load of BS... (pardon my french) but, lets wait and see what Paul have to say about it.
wilfw
Hi Andris, yes that's what I thought. Some Home brew shop coming up with a poor excuse for running out of a stock item. I believe you're a member of the British forum in question so you've no doubt read the thread I'm referring to.
PB2
Original Series Stout outsells Irish Stout by more than 20 fold. Rumour squashed! [rightful]

Slurtis Staggersalot
Now that we know it's not going away anytime soon, what should we do to it? I just bought my first can of it last week and have been contemplating a few different ideas. I've got some chocolate malt I'd like to try out and I was thinking a coffee flavor would go along nice too. Maybe call it a Mocha Stout?
Stout Dave
Bloody Hell, I almost had a heart attack reading that. It makes a nice drinking stout just with the Be2, I have put on a batch of the Best Extra Stout recipie that calls for a can of dark malt and 500g of Dex. Thick as vegemite to start, tested at 1071, coming down nicely though. Damn, drooling already. Stout Dave
Trusty1
SS - My second ever batch was an original series stout made with 1kg x BE2 with an extra 500gms of LDM. It is right up there with my best of about 20 batches thus far, even though I REALLY did NOT know what I was doing. Remember to watch out for the Krazy Krauzen!! Kearnage
I've done the 'stouter stout' recipe which was good, and the toucan best extra stout (Stout, Dark Ale, 1 KG dextrose from memory) which is still young, but absolutely amazing knock your socks off stuff. I've rechristened it 'Sledgehammer Stout'. Dan
Slurtis Staggersalot
I've got a Dark Ale and a Stout on hand, maybe I should start with the toucan recipe. I've got two 46l fermenters so krauzen won't be a problem. Now that I think about it I think what I'll do is pick up another Original series stout and do one batch with LDM and dextrose and the toucan side by side. then I can have a comparison taste test [devil]
Muddy Waters
I'd recommend the 2 can (1x dark,1x stout) with 1kg dextrose that Dan mentioned above. Simple but bloody brilliant. I've still got about half of the last batch I made (probably about 12-14 months ago) and it is ageing nicely [love]
The Brew Master
I did a 2can about 2 years ago, I still have 20 or so longnecks left. It is very nice, will sample a couple next year!!!!! Cheers, Peter

The Brew Master
Muddy How about we get together sometime & sample a few.[biggrin] I still have 2 longnecks of "Nut Brown Ale" that was bottled in 2001. Cheera, Peter
Slurtis Staggersalot
Toucan it is! I'll put it down this weekend, and hopefully it'll be good by Christmas... I doubt I can make it last a year or more like you people with crazy amounts of restraint though. I might just have to hide a few bottles from myself and other would be beer ransackers [bandit]

Cheera, Peter It'd be a pleasure Peter [biggrin] Wow! 2001 for the nut brown ale. When did you last have one and how did it taste? I've never tried that style of beer. The Brew Master
Muddy, I had one during the winter months with a rep who was up from Melbourne. "It was delicious" The last batch was bottled on 27/09/2007, I have not sampled this one yet! (Put a bottle in the fridge tonight)[whistling Cheers, Peter

Slurtis Staggersalot
When doing the toucan brew should I pitch both yeast sachets? I ended up not getting around to putting the brew down yesterday due to becoming engrossed in a good book. I'm finished the book and ready to make beer though, I'm pretty sure that both yeast sachets are the same thing so I might as well pitch both right? Muddy Waters
Yep toss them both in Slurtis [biggrin]
Slurtis Staggersalot
Thanks Muddy, I'm going to drag myself away from the computer and mix it up right now. It's my last chance until next weekend to get this brew going and I must have some stout on hand [love]
Muddy Waters
Pitch the yeast and stand back [rightful] It is a pretty explosive fermentation [devil]
Slurtis Staggersalot
I'm not too worried, my fermenter has about 25cm of head space with 23 liters in it. I just pitched the yeast and I'm waiting for the accurate hydrometer reading. It looks like it's going to be about 1060. It is a frothy brew indeed! There was quite a bit of foam just from mixing the beast up [devil] On the weekend I think I'll run out and buy another Original series stout and put it down with a kilo of dextrose just to get an idea of what I've done. Maybe a dark ale tin too [ninja] I think I may have OCBMD (Obsessive Compulsive Beer Making Disorder) [biggrin]
