wilfw
I've bought a Coopers Original series bitter kit, not realising it wasn't one of the English Bitter Kits from the International series,(must be one of the last that the HBS has left of these). Can anyone tell me how this kit differs from the English Bitter and Australian Bitter in the International series and why have they stopped producing it? Was it that bad?, surely I can't be in for a disappointment can I?
brianc6
i would be guessing here only mate but i would imagine it would have to do with the grains the can has in it for 1 yeast would be another and at a guess the hops would be different correct me if i'm wrong masters as i said this would only be a guess
Muddy Waters
English Bitter hasn't been discontinued as far as I know. I don't know what the Aussie Bitter is like as I haven't tried. I assume the English Bitter is darker and a bit more on the bitter side. It does make a great beer though.
wilfw
Hi Muddy, no it's not the English Bitter I've got, it's the original series Bitter which I understand is not being produced anymore and is the predecessor of the International series English Bitter - hope that makes sense. I think the shop must be selling them off as I got it fairly cheap with a best before date of December 2010, so getting quite close.
Muddy Waters
Right you are Wilfw - Misread your post [biggrin] I hope they gave you a discount on old stock [rightful]
PB2
The thread about the new English Bitter is here Poor sales performance and not really being to style, were the main reasons behind Original Series Bitter's demise.
Luke
The Original Series Bitter was one of my early favourites. It was sad to see it go. I'd be swapping the yeast that came with that can for a fresh one.
wilfw
Hi Luke, The kit is still within its' best before period, but I take your point about the yeast. I think I'll dry hop it with some East Kent Goldings or Fuggles considering the new English Bitter has late hopping.
Slurtis Staggersalot
If I was you Wilf I'd make it pretty close to recipe, that way you'll know exactly what you are missing out on when you can't find it anymore.
wilfw
What is the recommended recipe for that kit, it clearly has (or had) its' fans so I assume it must have been a pretty good bitter that Coopers looked to make even better with the English bitter
Slurtis Staggersalot
I've never had a can of it in my posession. I'm assuming it calls for 1kg of Dex and nothing else though because it is from the original series... I'd probably substitute some LDM and that's it.
