Thinking about doing a partial mash.

I am thinking about doing a partial mash at some point in the future. looking at doing the bag in a pot type method. I was hoping to do an American Amber Ale, that would use up some of my remaining hops. I want to to be slightly lower in gravity than the style would indicate:

AAA V1 (American Amber Ale)

Original Gravity (OG): 1.040 (\xb0P): 10.0

Final Gravity (FG): 1.010 (\xb0P): 2.6

Alcohol (ABV): 3.93 %

Colour (SRM): 11.9 (EBC): 23.4

Bitterness (IBU): 30.1 (Average)

1.5 Kg Dry Malt Extract - Amber

1.0 Kg Pale Malt

0.5 Kg Caraamber

0.3 Kg Crystal 60

15g Cascade (7.8% Alpha) @ 30 Minutes (Boil)

20g Galaxy (13.4% Alpha) @ 20 Minutes (Boil)

15g Cascade (7.8% Alpha) @ 10 Minutes (Boil)

20g Galaxy (13.4% Alpha) 20 Minutes @ Flameout(Aroma)

Fermented at 20\xb0C with Safale US-05

How would this turn out?

Looks good Scott.

Never used Caraamber before, but with the amber DME and the Crystal as well it's sure to be a lovely deep colour.

As for the hops, some will tell you that you're using too much Galaxy. I say go for it, I love how punchy that particular hop is.

Hope you enjoy the process of partial mashing. It only took me two or three goes before I started AG'ing and I haven't looked back since.

Cheers,

Phil

and I'd probably go 15 Cascade and 10 Galaxy as a dry hop..

Looks like the makings of a fine brew indeed [bandit]

Hiya Trooper! [biggrin]

BJCP guidelines for American Amber Ale.

Your recipe certainly fits into that category nicely. [happy]

As far as mods of it go, you can darken the eventual EBC by simply switching the Light Crystal to a Medium Crystal, & your bittering hop doesn't necessarily have to be citrusy. Purely choice though.

Sounds nice. Good luck with it. [cool]

Anthony.

Would I be better off just using 800g of medium crystal rather than the caraamber and crystal?

That's a bit hard to say mate without first trying the recipe. Personally I would be enclined to drop the crystal altogether and run with only 500g CaraAmber.
