GrumpyOldDog
Hi all I'm fairly new at all this and still just doing the straight kit brews and the last dozen brews have been consistently great. As soon as i get enough stock up I'll start being adventuresome but the question at the mo is my og is usually between 1036-40 and the fg is usually 1002-00 is this right for what I'm brewing.Everything I've read recons it should be done around 1006 and start in the 40's.So is my hydrometer out or does it really matter as long as i can get a start and finish ? Cheers to all Beers for all
ninja_drift
sounds good, the lower it goes the more sugar its fermented, your pretty lucky i usually only get a few that drop below 1010....
JaredW
are you taking your hydro readings at 20c the hydromiter is calibrated to be acurate at that temp coopers supply a chart on how to correct your gravity readings at difrent temps
GrumpyOldDog
brewed and measured between 23 and 20 deg's at 23 there is only 0.001 adjustment
PB2
FG will vary with different recipes - what's yours? What does the hydro read in water?
GrumpyOldDog
Just a straight real ale, lager, draught and one kg of dextrose. The hydro in water reads 996, I think it all makes sense now
Andris
Could you please explain hydro reading 996 in clear water that makes sense? For those who still have a neat "n00b" cap :-) thanks in advance!
Muddy Waters
Andris, if Grumpy is getting a reading of 0.996 in water at the temperature his hydrometer was calibrated at it means his hydrometer is out by 4 points - It should read 1.000. Therefore, his low FG makes more sense now. For example, if he has a final gravity of 1.005 with his hydrometer (allowing for any temp corrections) the true reading would actually be 1.009. Cheers. GrumpyOldDog
Cheers pb2 for pointing me in the right direction now i know its out by 4 its all good seeing as the fg is usually 0002-0000+0004 = fg 0006-0004 [happy]
