thebeerpig
Hi Fordy - if you ferment your kit with no sugar added, when bottled it will have an alcohol content of around 2.7%. Every 100 gram of sugar that you add to the wort will increase the alcohol content of your brew by around 0.2% of alcohol. Taste wise, it is generally recommended not to exceed adding 1kg of sugar. 1Kg of sugar gives an alcohol content of around 4.7%.
Otto Von Blotto
1kg of sugar won't taste very good either. I wouldn't exceed about 300-400g for most beers. Instead of sugar, use malt extract. The beer will be much better for it. Or a combination e.g. 1kg dry malt extract and 200g sugar. The idea is to keep the sugar addition (if any) low, and use a majority of malt, otherwise the beer turns out watery and depending on the fermentation temp it can be cidery as well.
