YOUR World Cup diet could be saving your life, with a new study showing beer and pizza help fight cancer.

One of the main ingredients in beer appears to arrest prostate cancer, according to new findings by US researchers.

Oregon State University researcher Emily Ho said the effective ingredient was xanthohumol, a cancer-fighting antioxidant found in hops.

But you would have to down more than 17 pints to have an effect, she admitted.

However, researchers said it would be feasible to make pills containing concentrated doses of xanthohumol, or to add more of the chemical to hops, as a brewery has done in Germany.

In a separate study by the US National Prostate Cancer Coalition, tomato sauce has been found to effectively fight cancer, meaning beer and pizza could be a life-saving formula.

"It's every man's dream to hear that beer and pizza can prevent cancer," researcher Richard Atkins said.

"Bur our hope is that men know the facts and get tested for prostate cancer. Food no matter how helpful it may be is not a full preventive for prostate cancer."

Well spotted Pete! We beer drinkers have known about the restorative properties of ale for centuries and doctors are still prescribing a medicinal Coopers Stout to patients low on iron or recovering from illness. Unfortunately I wasn't able to locate a copy of the research paper in order to find out which beer the researchers were referring to when they said it would require 17 pints to have the desired effect. Hopping rates vary widely and mainstream American lagers are not known for their hop character or high bitterness levels. I'm betting it wouldn't take 17 pints of Coopers Stout to have the desired effect. In fact we recently received a lovely thank you letter from a lady in Sydney who swears that a glass of Coopers Stout a day is the primary reason that she has made such a speedy recovery from bowel cancer. Of course we can't make such claims for our products but it does look like this is yet another case of research bearing out what has been supported by anecdotal evidence for years.

Cheers, Frank.
