givemeanother
Hi Guys, I have a friend who has bottled Tooheys Draught and tasted it at 6 months and believes it has an odour (which he can't describe) but tastes great. Any clues what may have caused this ?? cheers givemeanother
Worts Happening
Hi givemeanother, Does your friend uses Sodium Metabisulphite (a white powder that is toxic on the nose) to clean his brewing equipment and his bottles? I ask this because I once cleaned my bottles with SM and never completely drained the SM from my bottles. I then filled the bottles and stored them for two weeks. When I cracked open one to try it, I took a whiff to see what it smelt like, I was horrified, it smelt like rotten egg gas. Straight away I was asking every one I knew who homebrewed what could have happened. What it came down to I should have drained the SM solution or rinsed the bottles with clean water before I filled them with brew. After all that, if the beer tastes ok but smells like rotten egg gas (should only be as soon as the cap is off), it should be ok to drink however, your friend needs to make that decision. The Brew Master
Hi, Givemeanother The problem could also be that the brew got sunburnt. It may have got too hot during fermentation, or in the bottles during 2nd fermentation. This has happened to me when brewing through the hotter weather, but tasted ok. PB2
It would be a real bonus if he could describe the odour... Here's a few odours, linked to faults, that can come through in beer which may prompt your friend; wet cardboard, cooked corn, butterscotch, sulphur (rotten egg), vinegar, solvent, almond essence, skunky.
