Bazz
G'Day all. I've done quite a few brews and most of them have come out very drinkable. I just started one yesterday arvo, went out last night and when I woke up this morning the airlock was dry. Normally I keep an eye on it and top it up but obviously wasn't around to do it. How much risk is there to the brew? When I topped the airlock back up it immediately bubbled away again so there was quite a bit of pressure still being produced, so would that be enough to keep the air out? Cheers Bazz
Hashie
Hey Bazz, I reckon you'd be pretty safe. It's my understanding that the Co2 will devour the oxygen (I could be wrong) and if it was only for a few hours or overnight, I wouldn't be to concerned. I know people that open ferment (tea towell covering brewing bucket) that have never had any trouble. So I doubt a little time with a dry air lock will be the cause of to many dramas. Bazz
Ah yeah, forgot about that open fermenting. Thanks for that.
PB2
CO2 does not consume Oxygen. Being heavier than air it can displace the air out of the headspace. Providing the brew is fermenting vigourously...there should be no issue with the water in the airlock blowing out.
Bazz
Thanks for the response. Yes it was fermenting very vigorously so I think it should be good. Have bottled it now so time will tell.
