Brewing sugars to return to Woolworths

Kevin

Recommended Posts

I took the advice in the Coopers Club newsletter to protest to Woolworths about them removing Coopers brewing sugars from their range. I have just received a follow-up reply, stating that "after a number of customer

queries we will now re-range the sugars back into stores in the near future".

So, thanks, Woolworths. That's good news.

Well Done Kevin!!

Thanks to all who have contacted Woolworths so far.

If you haven't contacted them yet, and you use our sugars, please get in contact with them. They tend to react on a state-by-state basis. So if they haven't had many complaints from a particular state they may choose to not re-range in that state.

After reading of Kevin's success I emailed Woollies to note that Homebrew supplies had been disappearing from the shelves at my local store and I now have to travell a considerable distance in order to find the sugars, etc that I need.

I had an email reply by return to say that my request had been forwarded to the appropriate Business Manager. Today, 6 days later, I had a call from Woollies to say that there had been a number of requests similar to mine and the Homebrew range would be returned to the shelves in four to six weeks.

It's nice to know that Woolies, at least, listens to it's customers!

Thanks, Kevin for the idea.

Well done John!!

If your local Woolworths no longer stocks our sugars (or never did), make your voice heard....at the moment, we are getting promises but have not witnessed any positive action from Woolworths.

It's good for Woolworths to get an understanding of the enormity of their decision....due to their gradual but consitent reduction in shelf space for home brew over the years, Woolworths have lost home brewing customers, and so, they may be unaware of the popularity of home brewing in Australia.

I have just sent an e-mail to give Woolies a bit of a rev up about taking the fermentables off the shelf. I explained that it was like stocking bread but not stocking butter and if I was inconvenienced to find my fermentables elsewhere I might as well buy my HB kits and groceries at the same venue.

A couple of months back I gave the manager of my local Big W a rev up (I saw him in the shop) about not keeping enought BE1 and 2 in stock/on the shelves. He took onboard what I said and the other day when I spoke to him again he explained hadn't realised that there was such a market for the product. His sales he said had gone up quite considerably since he had kept the shelves stocked better and I expect will continue to go up if Woolies continue down their silly path.

Anyway, for anyone in the Woden area of the ACT, Big W at the Woden Plaza is the place to go. Generally the HB kits and fermentables at Big W are actually cheaper than Woolies on a regular basis. Of course if you want to get the more specialised Coopers HB kits you still have to go to the HB shop.

Cheers

Peter

p.s. look forward to having a beer with you again at the next club night in the ACT. Any idea when that will be??

Paul,

I eventually received a reply from Woolies in resonse to my e-mail. Like the other members have stated Woolies have confirmed that they will be putting the fermentables back on the shelves. Following is their response.

Quote

Responding to your range query on coopers sugars, at the review in

April/May and based on sales we deleted the range and as such were

only going to range the concentrates, however after a number of

customer queries we have decided to re-range the sugars nationally

which will occur in July. Product will be available from this time. I do

apologise for any inconvenience caused. Any further query please advise.

Unquote

As you will note they have said they intend to put them back on the shelves "nationally".

Now that we have made a fuss and got them to change their original decision I will be doing the right thing and picking up my HB gear from them.

I hope other members will do the same.

I will also be giving the local manager a gee-up if the shelves are empty of stock "especially BE2". I am sure some of their sales problems are because they don't keep enough stock on the shelves, thereby missing out on sales - my previous e-mail re Big W is a case in point.

Cheers

Peter :

My local Woolies stocks Cooper's dextrose & Cooper's BE1, but not BE2. I find this annoying as some of the brews I want to try (like Sparkling Ale) suggest the use of BE2.

I have only just become a Cooper's Club member and was unaware of the fight to get Cooper's sugars back on the shelf.

Now that I know this is a team effort, I will contact my local store and see if they can stock BE2. (I currently have to drive 30km to get BE2).

What do you think about the chances of getting Wollies to stock the PET bottles too?

Woolies have changed their attitude to the Home Brew category somewhat since their category manager moved on - the new guy appears more ethusiastic! They continue to have shelf-space restrictions so PETs may be difficult to get into the stores.

The recipe for Sparkling Ale is really only available at Home Brew specialist stores and our on-line store.

You could try two cans of Australian Pale Ale (maybe 300g of sugar) in 25litres and see what you think. Throw in both sachets of yeast.

I am fortunate that I have a Coles right near a woolies....If one doesn't have it, the other does....

Lately, Coles seems to be better stocked, but woolies has been cheaper on what limited stuff they have there....

My local Woolies has finally started stocking BE2 as well as BE1, but not things like carbonation drops or PET bottles yet.

However, the local Action Supermarket has changed into a SuperIGA and now stocks Cooper's PET bottles, Cooper's carbo drops, Cooper's BE1 & BE2. Sensational!

Eat it, Woolies!

I go to Big W in Ballarat, they seem to ahve a pretty big stock of Coopers products, includeing the P.E.T bottles.

Never even looked in Woolies.

Actually wanted a Coopers Pilsener and had to go to the Home Brew shoper here instead, i ntoiced they never stocked any Coopers Branded Fermentables so just got them at Big W.

Yep, the Thomas Cooper brand Home Brews and Malt Extracts should only be available through Home Brew Specialist stores.

We are yet to get Carbo Drops into Woolies - not for lack of trying!
