As far as I know, Altbier is brewed with ale yeast. That's why they call it alt ('old'), because before lager yeast was introduced and it took Germany by storm, all beers were brewed with ale yeast. But i doubt it's meant to be historical and just shows the connection. Anyway, i doubt albier was called altbier until lager took over, it was probably just bier.
