Staggerinn
Hi, Ive just made a couple of AG brews with pilsner malt . I have not used pilsner malt before and Im finding it really malty/grainy. 100% Pilsner mash at 6C ,25 IBU Hallertau , 10LT batch, US05 yeast 90% pilsner, 10% Vienna mash at 67C ,25 IBU Hallertau , 10LT batch, lallemand Kolsch yeast. It stands out as the overall flavour of the brew. Its much stronger than any commercial brew Ive had. Is that what you find or do you think it may be old malt from the LHBS? Ive read that most people cant pick the difference between using pale/pilsner malt, but mine are miles apart. Any thoughts?
Norris!
I find pilsner malt to be grainy but crisper than ale malt which is more bready to my tastes buds which adds more of an overall mouthfeel and body to the beer than pilsner malt which I find thinner than a brew with some or all ale malt and other malts added to it. Norris!
Hmmm maybe it wasn't Pilsner malt, they can mix them up. Sorry for your issues. Maybe try some at the store with some from home, if any left. I chew on the grains before I buy them to try them out first, sometimes it helps.
