Otto Von Blotto
Hey everyone, Since I'm a little low on funds at the moment, I'm thinking of doing this recipe that I've come up with simply because it requires the purchase of the least amount of ingredients. I have a kilo of dex and about 75g of Centennial, and probably around 500g of light crystal. Which means I only have to buy 2 malt tins and yeast. So I'm thinking something along these lines: 2 x 1.5kg tins TC Light Malt Extract 300g Light Crystal 300g Dextrose Steep crystal for 30 mins in a litre of water @ 66-67\xb0C, strain into pot, then bring volume up to 7 litres 7 litre boil with 730g LME added: 40g Centennial @ 40 mins 20g Centennial @ 20 mins Cool it down then strain all this into the FV and add the rest of the LME US-05 yeast Batch 23 litres Try to ferment between 18-20\xb0C Bulk prime with 160-170g Dex I put all this into IanH's spreadsheet, it predicts OG 1049, FG 1013, 5% ABV, near enough to 37 IBU (which is only marginally higher than the Centenarillo I did a few weeks back and I reckon it could have been more bitter than I made it), and 9 EBC (color). Any thoughts? Cheers, Kelsey
Guest
Looks ok Kelsey. What about including some late hops?... maybe cascade or amarillo.
Otto Von Blotto
I haven't got any Cascade but I do have some Amarillo left over from the Centenarillo. Might throw them in towards the end of the boil too, there's only about 10g left may as well use it up![biggrin]
Hairy
I was thinking the same thing Bill. A 10 minute addition and a dry hop of something would be good. Even if it is all Centennial.
Guest
10g Amarillo at 0 min would work well [love]
Guest
The only thing I would comment on is the Bulk Priming rate. Im sitting on 125g DEX to bulk prime (23lt) which is up from what I was doing (100g).. I find that 160-180g is a 'touch' too gassy. 125g lends itself to a nice compact head that will lace all the way down the glass.. though a part of that can also be attributed to additions of wheat malt. I find that with a lower carbing that the head is much nicer and more compact.. which I like.. If you dont care about the head retention properties it doesnt matter too much but I guess thats the beuty of Bulk priming, you get to tailor the beers to what you like. Recipe looks good, great combo of hops and should be a pleasant brew. Yob
Otto Von Blotto
I'm liking the sound of the 10g Amarillo at 0mins, I think I might just do that. I do like good head retention, in saying that all the brews I did before bulk priming (drops) have had good retention, the Centenarillo I used 170g I think, it seemed to have good retention too, but I might try reducing it a bit just to experiment and see how it goes. I don't find it too gassy but maybe I'm just too used to drinking lagers that usually have more gas than ales[lol]
Otto Von Blotto
Put this brew down earlier today, now enjoying one of my earlier ones while watching the footy[biggrin] Anyway, I did change the recipe slightly from the originally posted one. Everything procedure-wise is the same, however the final recipe was: 2 x 1.5kg tins TC Light Malt Extract 300g Light Crystal 300g Dextrose 7 litre boil with 730g LME added: 40g Centennial @ 40 mins 20g Centennial @ 20 mins 10g Amarillo @ 5 mins Then steep for 30 mins US-05 yeast Batch 23 litres Should be bottling in 2 weeks so I'll have a taste test in 3 weeks and let you all know how it turned out! (Young at least, it'll have a couple of months in bottles after that). Cheers, Kelsey
