Double IPA in the style of Brewdog Hardcore IPA

Hi, I'm a Newbie just about ready to bottle my first batch (Authentic IPA, with added 40g cascade dryhopping) and I can't wait to start my next batch! (of course I'm also looking forewards to trying the authentic IPA with some carbonation)

I love powerful IPA, 2xIpa etc with lots of hops and punch. And was wondering if maybe I could brew something in the style of Brewdogs Hardcore IPA for my next batch, I'm not expecting a clone but that kind of style. link: http://www.brewdog.com/product/hardcore-ipa

I don't yet have the opportunity to do a full-boil, so I believe I should use beer-kits to get enough hop bitterness, and maybe try steeping grains also(?)

Do you think this would turn out ok(?):

19liter batch

500gram cara-crystal 120 (steeping)

2x Coopers IPA 1,7kg kits

2kg LME

11,5grams Safale US-05

I have 60grams of cascade and 100grams og chinookpellets, for late hop additions and dry hopping.

This would give me an OG of 1091 (a little higher than the Hardcore's 1084) and ABV 9% (a little lower than Hardcore's 9,2%)

Any advice?

Hi Svein

I plugged your ingredients into the "Kit and Extract Beer Designer" spreadsheet and got an OG of 1.102 and 10.6% in the bottle.

If you do it to 22L you'll have 1.088 and 9.2%

That's all I can offer, as I don't know the brewdog beer. But it seems to fit under an Imperial IPA.

Hi Svein

I think I used light dry malt in the calcs, which gives a higher gravity - with liquid malt it's 1.095 and 9.4% in the bottle.

93.4 IBU's - you will def need to add some additional hopes to try and balance I think. I'm not that familiar with amounts of hops yet so I can't suggest how much to add. I think you will need some for flavouring though

Hi SveinH

I am a new brewer (about 2 years mostly brewing with extract cans, some steeped grains and hop additions). I am thinking along the same lines as you were in 2012 and would love to make an Imperial IPA.

How did your brew work out?

My guess is considering the last post is over 3 years ago, you won't get a response...

My suggestion would be try it and see but bear in mind big beers like what you are planning/what he describes above need some time to mature so probably don't even try it until a month in the bottle at least

Hi SveinH. You might want to try punching your OG and the age of your yeast into Mr. Malty yeast calculator, depending on what volume you decide on. I suspect you might need more yeast, and you should probably rehydrate it, and add yeast energizer too. That is all I can suggest. Leave yourself lots of headspace in your fermentor as it might be explosive.
