NewtownClown
Wow! Had a few on tap last night. A very hoppy Australian Pale Ale. I know its made by Kirin owned mega-swill Lion Nathan (Chuck Hahn), still it is a good beer (on tap). Draught version is brewed at Jindabyne whilst the bottles are produced at Camperdown, Sydney (Malt Shovel). I have heard the bottled stuff is disappointing... From the first whiff I recognised Galaxy (I have a kilo in my fridge and have used it quite a bit of late). This would not be hard to duplicate... I am thinking Cooper's Australian Pale Ale 1 kilo of LDM (500 grams in a 5 litre boil) 14 grams Galaxy for 10 mins and 14 grams Galaxy at flame out for about 30 mins whilst cooling in an ice bath. When fermentation has slowed I will taste an may dry hop with additional galaxy @ 1 gram/L US-05 or re-cultured Cooper's (prob go the cooper's for the Kosci was cloudy and cooper's is less flocculant than the 05 and the esters will suit this beer and I have four 20 ml vials at the moment). Neck
Awesome recipee, This beer actually took out best ale and best beer at a qld food wine and beer show late last year. So you'd say galaxy huh? My guess was amarillo but I havent had a chance to really compare the two, am I way off?
GregT5
The website says Galaxy & Pride of Ringwood, so my guess would be PoR for bittering & Galaxy for flavour/aroma. Martin, I reckon you are on the money with your recipe. If you make it let us know how it turns out.
NewtownClown
... been in the fermenter for 1 week today and has hit estimated FG, samples tasting great and the aroma is there. I upped the Galaxy to 35 grams 15 grams for 15 min 20 grams at flameout. Made up a 2 litre starter and primary fermentation was quick so racked onto 28 grams Galaxy on day 3. will keg and bottle next Sunday...
weggl
Made a Wosiusco Ale formally Mt Selwyn Pale Ale. It was an attempt at cloning Kosciusko Pale Ale, as my nick name is Wossa, my son in law renamed the ale. Tried it at 3 weeks in the bottle, it is A1, but you will need to like Galaxy hops. But a very nice drink for such an early taste. CAN PALE ALE 1KG AME (ESB) 150 DEX 15g GALAXY 10 MIN 10g GALAXY DAY 3 23L US-05 YEAST Will try one tonight now it is about 10 weeks old will let yaall know how it goes. Muddies Pet Weggl Tried one tonight, was better young, don't make it, it is drinkable and thats about it.[pinched] [crying]
essfer
Thread revival! Kosi is one of my favourite tap beers (don't hate, we like what we like!) so I'm keen to make a 'homage' to it. Because clone is probably a little hopeful. Mixing the ideas already in this thread and other recipes for 150 Lashes clones, I'm thinking... 23L batch 1 can Cooper's Australian Pale Ale 500g LDM (5L hop boil) 1kg BE1 10g PoR for 15 min boil 10g Galaxy for 10 mins 15g Galaxy at flame out for about 30 mins, cooling to ~22C 11g US05 Pitch and maintain at ~21C After 3 days in FV add hop bag with 25g Galaxy It's my second season of brewing and I'm keen to start brewing some slightly nicer beers than the straight kit stuff. I've only done one hop boil, strictly to Cooper's recipe (Artisan Reserve), so any input on this recipe would be greatly appreciated.
Otto Von Blotto
Both my regular pubs have it on tap too, I don't mind it at all. Not enough to want to brew a clone of it though so I can't really help you there, but the recipe sounds like it'll make a pretty nice beer all the same. Not sure about the 15 minute addition of PoR though, is this just for a bit of extra bitterness?

essfer
Maybe...? 10g PoR @10min 10g Galaxy @ 10min 15g Galaxy @ flame out. Keeps it closer to Newtown Clown's recipe, a little hoppier and includes the Pride. Whatever I do it'll turn out a beer I'll be happy to drink and I can make adjustments based on the outcome. Gotta love that about brewing - it's all beer, and you can always make another one!

Magnaman
G'day essfer, I don't know the beer that you refer to, but the beer you propose seems Okay and don't worry to much about the nose wrinkles when ever Pride of Ringwood is mentioned. If the PoR is fresh and used as suggested by you I don't see an issue, but from my personal view I would use more malt and not the BE1 and just add some dextrose, no more than 300g, but that may not be anything like the beer you are trying to brew. Have a go, make the beer then you know, you can then take the next move. Oh, NC is rarely here of late but I have seen his foot prints over at AHB. Cheers. Otto Von Blotto
No nose wrinkles here, it just seems like an unnecessary addition, a bit like Gibbo's Magnum addition in his kit version of my red ale. I think the APA kit has sufficient bitterness for a beer like Kosciuszko Pale Ale, and the 10 minute Galaxy addition will add a small amount itself. I would drop the PoR, and I would agree about dropping the BE1 and just using malt and a small amount of dex. If you feel it could use more bitterness, you can always add more on the next go, but you can't remove it if it's too bitter.

Hairy
I had one of these beers on Thursday night. I asked for a schooner of it from a bar in the city and it cost $9 Anyway, I would add a little wheat malt in your recipe

essfer
$9 a schooner??? It's good, but maybe not nine bucks good. I saw that the Lashes clones use Wheat Malt so going to check LHBS for some. I'm think 1kg Wheat, 500g Light, 300g Dex and use both the US05 and kit yeast packs. Unless you guys think the US05 can chew through all that sugar on its own? Doomy
That's a walk in the park for US-05 mate. Keep your kit yeast as a backup.

essfer
I can't imagine how good the beer must be that you AG guys brew because I've just cracked my first Pale from the recipe above, just over two weeks in the bottle. Easily the best drop I've made. Satisfaction.
Otto Von Blotto
Good to hear mate! How close does it resemble the Kosciuszcko? While most of my AG beers have been miles above anything I brewed with kits and/or extract, I have brewed a few dodgy ones that I almost tipped down the sink - something I never came close to with kits. So sometimes, they aren't as good. Overall I think well brewed AG produces better beers, or not so much better, but fresher tasting, however, if it's badly brewed or a dodgy recipe then it won't turn out very nice. I've been keen to try it for a few months and haven't got around to finding it on tap anywhere yet. I regularly head down to Brisbane for Green Beacon beers in Teneriffe so wouldn't mind fitting in a visit to somewhere that has the Kosciusko on tap to see if I'd like to clone it. Otto Von Blotto
Hey mate, the two I've seen it on tap at are Irish Murphy's and the Elephant Hotel, in the city/valley respectively. I'm pretty sure the Pig n' Whistle pubs around the place have it on tap as well, though, now that I think of it. I visited the one in Queen St mall on Saturday night before heading to a show down the road and it was on tap there too.
